That person you meet when you attend a scientific conference and want to quickly get breakfast alone before returning to your room to prepare your presentation

No, on steam deck - no way I could take this intensity in vr (although I'll certainly try it out sometime)

I'm finally playing Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice and I've never felt so unnerved by a game - the sound design is extraordinary

It's that time of year when many start thinking about applying for PhDs. If you're applying for a UK PhD position, here is a blog post I wrote a while back that might be helpful

How to get PhD funding in the UK
It is that time of year again. The leaves are turning golden, red, and orange (or just brown), the nights are drawing in, and there is a chi...

It's Dyspraxia Awareness Week!

Please share this information video we commissioned from dyspraxic animator Charlotte O'Neill, explaining a bit about dyspraxia (aka developmental coordination disorder). The video is suitable for school-aged kids, so share widely.

I've discovered something called the 'beer mile', where you run 4 laps of a 400m track and chug a beer at the start of each lap, which feels like the race I've been training my whole life to win

Never-been-an-oncologist Makis still pushing anti-parasitic cancer grift

Pediatric cancer: Ivermectin and Mebendazole is the answer.
Artificial Intelligence in cancer is a scam.
You don't need Al.
You need quality anti-parasitics.

Medtech (or whatever) software needs upkeep/updates to be useful, and that requires some kind of funding model because stuff can't stay a side project forever (a la psychtoolbox). I think sharing with an NDA is actually pretty reasonable in this context

I've got this, but avoided reading it due to the suspicion it will make me cry

We didn't even get that far - the corridor of bugs and the squashing room of spikes made the lead up to that scene too much to handle before bedtime

Pro tip: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is too scary for the children to watch

Gavin's movie reviews

Thursday Murder Club

Stellar cast, and enjoyable whodunnit that was loved by kids and grownups alike (one strong swear, but very funnily done)

8/10

Gavin movie review

K-Pop Demon Hunter

Gorgeous spectacle, good (deliberately generic, so anyone can relate) story, lots of heart

Didn't make me cry, which is reasonably rare

Controversially, I think frozen 2 is better than the original (which, to be fair, I had no particular emotional attachment to)

Moana 2 should indeed be avoided

Gavin's movie reviews are back!

Moana 2 was an empty soulless parody of one of the finest films ever

0/10

(kids like it way better than the original, but they are wrong)

If I know the authors, I usually sign. If I don't know them, it depends on the wider context (and also if a PhD student is involved in the review)

The proof-viewing request from this journal having a grammatical error is just a little too ironic for me to handle
