By applying a tracking method to both climate models and satellite data, @davyclimate.bsky.social found that sea ice age is a more sensitive indicator of change than ice thickness or volume.

In the Arctic, sea ice has a leading impact on ocean surface dynamics, mainly in the regions that are seasonally ice-covered. Supply et al., examine the seasonal cycle of the ocean surface conditions in the seasonal ice zone 🌊

🌡️ Not all hot nights are equal. We track “tropical nights” when temps never dip below 20 °C—but what if it’s already 20 °C at bedtime? I crunched ERA5 data for 5 European capitals. Let’s talk tropical 10 pm. 👇
Bar chart for Lisbon, Oslo, Paris, Rome, Vienna showing blue bars (tropical nights) vs orange bars (tropical 10 pms) in 2025 so far. Orange bars tower over blue in every city except Rome, highlighting bedtime heat.

Not bad at all! neXtSIM was mostly designed to represent the deformations of pack Arctic sea ice, so we wanted to check which opportunities it could offer in the Antarctic. Our results suggest that neXtSIM does pretty well at capturing the ice response to storms in regions like the Weddell Sea. 2/3

Happy to share our last study published in JAMES! In the manuscript led by R. Santana from NIWA, we tested our in-house sea ice model neXtSIM in the "other" hemisphere, to see how it would perform with Antarctic sea ice! And the answer is... 1/3
