The rest of the eleven species are also endemics to the SW, but have become hugely popular ornamentals elsewhere in Australia, as well as being WA’s state flower.

First described by John Lindley in his 1840 work A sketch of the vegetation of the Swan River Colony. Three subspecies are recognised, but I don’t know which ones you get around Wongan Hills.

drhoz.tumblr.com/post/7963503... #3148 - Anigozanthos humilis - Common Catspaw

A flowering, bird-pollinated perennial endemic to SW Australia, growing up to 1m in height, but half the size of the more famous Kangaroo Paw A. manglesii. That’s probably why they named it after a smaller animal.

The genus is found across much of Malesia & Australia, & was named after the first Lieutenant Governor of New South Wales, William Paterson, supposedly “a gentleman whose name has been long familiar to the naturalist”. I've never heard of him.

Drummondi is found across much of the Western Wheatbelt, and up into the Geraldton sandplains. It was named after James Drummond (late 1786 or early 1787 – 26 March 1863), an Australian botanist and naturalist and early settler in Western Australia.

drhoz.tumblr.com/post/7962379... #3145 - Patersonia drummondii

One of the native Irises better known as Purple Flags. Around Perth, the most common species is Patersonia occidentalis, but out around Wongan Hills there’s drummondi, and umbrosa, or at least subspecies of those.

Riccias have branching strap-like thalli, and rarely exceed 3cm across. There’s over 100 species worldwide, and one, Riccia fluitans, is a popular floating aquarium plant.

Sometimes the flowers are white, and quite often the plant is a leafless twining climber, as with the three species shown here.

The genus has about described 60 species (and MANY undescribed), mostly native to WA. They’re perennial herbs with bisexual flowers arranged singly or in groups of up to 50, with 6 mauve or blue tepals.

drhoz.tumblr.com/post/7961583... #3141-3143 - Twining Thysanotus sp.

According to Jolanda Keeble who wrote the book on local flora, and Terry Macfarlane at the WA Herbarium, there are at least 5 twining Fringe-Lillies growing around Wongan Hills, but only one has a formal description, as of 2024

The family was previously known as the Codoniaceae, but Codonia turned out to be a synonym of Fossombronia.
