Professor @ USC. I write about African American life in early national and antebellum Boston.

My posts are my own opinions and do not reflect those of my employer.
I woke up feeling distinctly logy, and thinking it was down to being cooped up on a rainy, gray day, I parked myself in front of my happy light for a few hours. Turns out that I’m coming down with something. Seriously bummed 🙁

I love, love, love Laura Edwards’ work, but these vertical running heads (running shoulders?) are a literal pain in the neck. Total graphic design fail 🗃️

Such good taste! This was my previous dog, Casey. A flattie.

If #Valentines is a difficult day for you, please know that even though she hasn’t met you, Tulip loves you 🖤🐕‍🦺

A historian’s Valentine’s Day shelfie. I think I covered all the bases 🗃️

I will take the day at home with the puppy over the workshop, please and thank you. This is Tulip when she was about the same age as yours, I'm guessing.

My copy is in incredibly good condition and cost less than most hardback university press books. Plus, I now know how to swear out a complaint against a dog in the correct legal manner!

The last few months, I’ve been working intensively with records of early C19 Boston Justices of the Peace. There’s hardly any scholarship about them, so to clarify matters, I bought a copy of the justicing manual they would have used and decided to learn they way they did: by the book 🗃️

It’s a cold, gray, rainy day here, and I decided I needed to go out and get hot chocolate to boost my spirits. I’m pretending that the pattern on the foam is a tulip 🌷

It’s been 𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐨 days since this dingdong ‘retrieved’ a plate from the table 🙄

Tulip thinks you’re pretty awesome!

This is what these bundles look like when they’ve been ‘sliced and diced.’ Any evidence of the court as an institution with work flows, clerical labor, or internal logic is rendered invisible. These sandwiches are also really hard to work through the deeper into a box one gets.

I’m heading off to bed feeling sort of beaten down by life, but I’ll try again tomorrow.

Oh, he’s so beautiful! I’ve always loved tufty toes, or truffula toes, as I call them. My old dog Casey had the most extravagant toe tufties imaginable. I still miss her.

No, no, no; that sounds genuinely interesting to me! I'm guessing you know that the African Humane Society incorporated in 1818?

Love this. A history editor at a major university press recently posted here that she had never seen a reader’s report asking for a submission to be longer, and that no one wanted to read long history books. I disagree. Here’s a 768pp counter-argument which I recently reread. LR;WI!

One of my students took this picture of Tulip in class. While she can be very busy at times, mostly, she just lounges around and cuddles her llama dolly. We talk about some pretty distressing topics, and Tulip helps provide emotional support for anyone who needs it.
