Black dogs, orange cats, and manuscripts. Professor @ USC. I write about African American life in early national and antebellum Boston.

My posts are my own opinions and do not reflect those of my employer.
I think of myself as a pretty good teacher, and in the past half dozen years, I have put more of my hope, energy, and dedication into teaching than anything else. But this semester, I just taught badly. There. I said it. We don’t talk enough about when things go sideways in class, and I wish we did.

TFW students go on vacation, and an entire flagship university campus becomes your personal dog park. Tulip could not be happier!

I would never in a million years have chosen a dog so wild, so mischievous, so energetic, or so relentless as Tulip, but having ended up with exactly that dog, I could not love it - or her - more. Her constant shenanigans are a complete joy! 🖤🌪️🐕‍🦺

It’s Thanksgiving Break, so Tulip got to run around campus off leash and enjoy the leaves.

On reflection, perhaps bringing Tulip to class the same day I brought donuts to class wasn’t the best thought out plan . . .

My last research trip was very spur of the moment, and I ended up hiring a cat sitter from Rover who stole a bunch of books from my house. It took a month and threats of police involvement to get them back. So, @kawulf.bsky.social, now you know that Lineage is so good that people will steal it!

If I ever need to improve my day, putting a fresh set of strings on my guitar usually does the trick. Today, I also replaced a cracked pickup ring, and gave the guitar a polish and intonation. Now everything looks good and sounds lush and chimey. Voilà!

Hey Raleigh folks, it looks like ICE has maybe gotten Apple Maps and Google Maps to remove the listing for their local operations center. If you want to write them a letter, here’s the address they don’t want you to see:

This recently catalogued rare book is a mid-17th century English history of the Crusades that includes wax seals and a manuscript letter. Most of the writing appears to be by Rev. John Dampier (1778-1841) of Somerset relating to the history of his family.

I almost died from a drug-resistant bacterial infection (m abscessus) and lost more than a year of my life to intensive treatment. This is wonderful news!
Chemists have discovered a promising new antibiotic that shows activity against drug-resistant bacterial pathogens
This discovery suggests a new paradigm for antibiotic discovery through identifying and testing intermediates in the pathways to diverse natural compounds
