My point here is they all perform relatively worse on the crime dimension than other IMD dimensions. But the issue of cash and power is paramount.

I'm not sure he's achieved nearly anything else from his manifestos, so much as he's talked a good game.
Also GMP is still a mess. In the 2025 IMD, 5 of the top 10 most deprived local authorities for the crime dimension are in GM.

As in understand it, being a PCC rather than mayor is the disqualifying role for being a member of the house of commons.

He has to stand down to stand not just if elected, I think. So he's gone either way. Though I suppose if he left it late he could restand in the by-election. www.electoralcommission.org.uk/guidance-can...

The wording is "at the time of your nomination and on polling day" Which is a bit ambiguous because it implies both rather than either. So zI question if he could just step down the day before polling day.

I'm not clear what is really being proposed. Seems not a single high speed line but a few upgrades to central stations and track. Some rebadging of electrification as NPR again. Really delivering the benefits needs more than that.

In the same way that the EU could be threatened strategically by USA & China combined, so could the USA of China by a combination of the EU and other power. So play Trump at his own game.
January 13, 2026 at 3:24 PM
Perhaps you're right and the EU will need to integrate further to be seen as the economic & military power that it already is. Removing the threat of Russia from EU borders frees up a lot of scope for a broader & more robust defense posture.
January 13, 2026 at 3:22 PM
Russia has a GDP and population both less than 1/3 of EU27. We don't talk about being carved up by Brazil or Indonesia. We only talk about Russia in these terms because of their aggression (& proximity).
EU could already I think wield overwhelming power if it chose to.

They may have excluded Greater Manchester because the police there have a system which just loses the crimes.

It's taken over a year to do a like-for-like replacement of one bridge over the west coast mainline, but sure, tunnel expansions wouldn't take decades at all.
