This Monday (13 Oct) is @undrr.bsky.social #DRRDay. The theme “Fund resilience, not disasters” to remind us that how we spend on DRR matters.

Real preparedness means investing in those most at risk, not just the most visible. Safety is a policy choice.

This image is AI.

A split image showing two contrasting scenes. On the left, a modern coastal city with tall skyscrapers, green spaces, and a strong concrete flood barrier protecting the shoreline. On the right, a crowded informal settlement with makeshift houses and tents built on muddy, flood-prone land. Several people are seen standing and working near the water. Across the centre of the image, bold white text reads, “Same hazard, different investment.” The contrast highlights global inequalities in disaster risk reduction funding and protection.

An illustration showing four people discussing disaster risk reduction (DRR). One person is wearing construction gear and holding plans, another person is in a wheelchair, and two others are standing and talking. They are set against a background showing hills, water, trees, and a lightning bolt, symbolising different hazards. The text above them reads, “Learn how to make DRR truly inclusive.”

Two of the most common climate misconceptions I see, even among knowledgeable folks, are that (1) most people aren't worried about climate change, and (2) if they were, they'd act.

Not true! Data show (1) most people are worried, but (2) they won’t act if they don’t know what to do-and most don’t.
A map of the world showing how levels of worry in most countries are greater than 70%. Source: Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, International Public Opinion on Climate Change, 2023.

Imagine this world: after a storm, headlines say “Unsafe housing left thousands exposed” not “Natural Disaster.”

Response fixes inequalities, funding builds resilience, and leaders face questions.

Disasters are human-made.

If you, like me, are the parent of a neuro-atypical child dreading this autism press conference, please remember: These are the people hurting our kids. Not us. They are the ones stigmatizing and pathologizing them. They are the ones peddling untested science. And we should be very, very angry.

In disasters, masculinities are rarely addressed, yet they shape risk and recovery.

Research exists but lags far behind.

A bright red background with a single glowing lightbulb hanging at the top centre, symbolising an idea or illumination. Beneath it, bold black text states: “Disasters are shaped by masculinities. Masculinities are shaped by disasters.” The phrase highlights how gender norms influence disaster experiences and how crises, in turn, reshape ideas of masculinity. At the bottom, white text reads “#InclusiveDRR,” linking the message to wider conversations on inclusive disaster risk reduction.

Together with Jimmy Kimmel, it looks like America has scrapped the First Amendment to preserve the Second.

Expect all the rest to go in due course, especially the 17th (Women’s Right to Vote).

Repealing the 3rd may be especially useful when taking over opponent cities (look it up).

Over the weekend, arrests at UK pro-Palestine protests showed shrinking civic space. #InclusiveDRR relies on civic freedoms, fair laws, and accountable digital tools.

Without them, resilience falls short.

Graphic titled ‘Structural drivers of risk and their impact on inclusive DRR’. It explains how rights erosion across civic, legal, and digital domains influences disaster risk reduction. A table shows three domains of rights exclusion. Civic space involves restrictions on protest, civil society activity, and freedom of voice, leading to reduced participation, weaker accountability, and lower public trust. Legal systems involve discriminatory laws, criminalisation of identity, and legal invisibility, resulting in exclusion from services, fear of seeking help, and limited legal recourse. Digital technologies involve surveillance, data misuse, and lack of oversight in automated systems, creating privacy risks and biased or incomplete decision making. The background is blue to green gradient with a yellow border highlighting the table.

UK phones will sound an emergency alert test tomorrow (Sunday 7th September 2025 at 3pm).

For those who need to keep a device private (e.g. survivors of abuse), you can switch these alerts off (steps in image below).

Please share this information widely.

The timing of a disaster can drastically shape how emergency managers and disaster specialists are able to respond.

A short blog post from me explores what this looks like in practice: www.linkedin.com/posts/kevinb...

#InclusiveDRR
Graphic titled ‘The timing of a disaster matters’. It shows a sun on the left and a moon on the right, with a curved line between them representing the passage of a day. Along the line are notes about how different times affect disaster response: Pre-sunrise religious activities can leave some communities at risk. Rush hour (school runs, commuters etc) can impact speedy response. Day-to-day activities (shopping, exercise etc) can leave people exposed to different hazards. Night-time adds poor visibility, sleeping populations and party-goers to rescue considerations.
