First week of term, first year of study, evening teaching, from Birkbeck to British Museum, from gallery to study room, from Neolithic Cumbria to Bronze Age Cambridgeshire through the connection of Langdale stone, from gold cup to gold-makers hoard.
Birkbeck students in gallery 51, hearing (and seeing in materials) stories of deposition and things with Neil Wilkin. Birkbeck students around a table watching and listening to Petra Jones describe the objects (their connections and biographies) that she brings out of small plastic boxes onto the table.

Father Thames:

Let us look at the River Thames.
One of England's watery gems.
Oily brown, greasy, muddy.
Looking foul, and smells of cruddy.
The conservancey say they’re cleaning it,
so why is it the colour of sh*t?

Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

It would be interesting* to see a FAME response - given that for years and until fairly recently the org was without an EDI rep on the Board. In fact famously there were more men called Tim than women on the FAME Board for a while (oh how we laughed 😬).

*Also miraculous.

It wasn’t all plain sailing of course and we (staff and union) challenged Taryn constantly but she had an open approach that we didn’t fully appreciate at the time.
drsadiewatson.bsky.social
Quoting this to acknowledge Taryn Nixon OBE (!) as a trailblazer and heroine - she alone spoke up against stopping pay minima in 2012, had women & mothers in senior mgt and field roles, and refused to play the game. Also carefully theorised mgt in a huge and complex org through chaotic times.

New paper. Recording the female experience of UK archaeology 1990-2010. Anne Teather and I document how an industry EDI agenda evolved in the 1990s and was dismantled, uncovering the ramifications of that for women archaeologists over the next decade.

And it’s impossible to show progress and encourage younger generations. I think we have a problem with needing senior roles to be archs though - we’ve lost generations of brilliant women & POC now so need new ideas.
drsadiewatson.bsky.social
Yes it’s a truly damning fact that we have fewer women in senior positions now than back then. And yet *still* they promote themselves and each other.
drsadiewatson.bsky.social
I think idea of ‘sector leadership” is massively overstating any influence CIfA might have had/can have over employers. It’s been further dismantled recently but wasn’t ever that significant. The CIfA-FAME power struggle is a whole other tedious sh*tshow but remains hugely relevant for diversity.

Paid a visit to the London arms fair today...

Found a component for cluster munitions, banned under international law, on full display.

Confirmed by staff, and removed swiftly by event organisers. But what else remains?

These vile weapons should never be peddled in the UK.
Display case showing DASD fuze, used to make cluster munitions work. Display case shows the fuze has been removed.

Love this for Khans and Peckham will owe them even more after this, my nanny used to say how posh Rye Lane was before the war and now we’ll get a glimpse.
joegiddings.bsky.social
Anyone who lives in South London knows the icon that is khans on rye lane. If you need it, you will find it in khan's.

Well now it turns out they are also into art deco restoration. Legendary status more than secured!
drsadiewatson.bsky.social
Completely agree, the Shard got away with piddling contribution which still rankles as it’s my borough, desperately in need of homes.
Also ‘public access’ in central London ≠ ‘public space’. S106 & CIL really needs an overhaul, there’s millions unspent. (I have ranted about this before 🙄)
drsadiewatson.bsky.social
It’s all incredible. Honestly can’t wait for the massive amounts of archaeology done on this to be made public 🤐
drsadiewatson.bsky.social
Section 106 and CIL £ in City tends to go on infrastructure and public realm (altho sometimes on CoL social housing *outside* the City), much currently on Bank station upgrade. This project is funding £900k towards that.

The crypt wasn’t underneath the tower - already relocated and rebuilt in 1870s. So slightly simpler than the docs might suggest, it was exposed prior to the tower works. Not to diminish the archaeological and engineering achievements!
