A very good list of questions. I would add "why does it have to be a physical card?" to the list though.

Seems largely redundant and 99% of what they want to achieve by just having a centralized ID register which aligns NIN etc.

My take (from Friday) on the digital ID proposals. I don't think it's relevant to say, "but other countries have ID cards, why can't we?" The critical questions here are implementation-based and it seems like they are up for grabs

Making this about immigration plays directly into the opposition’s playbook, undermines the central purpose of such a system, and ultimately means that politically it will be killed.

Make this about service delivery. Tories and Reform are utterly crap at that and the country is desperate for it
drtomemery.bsky.social
This is great news, but advocates should be making absolutely clear that the core purpose this is to improve service delivery and rights provision.

It’s not about fraud and security.

It’s about making society better. That’s it, no mission creep.

Academia is filled with missed meetings, deferred deadlines, vague promises half met, and obligations ducked.

Marcel is, for my money, the most effective Director in Social Science. Always delivers, always clear, always diligent.

Happy 25th Anniversary and I hope you are at Centerdata until 2050

🎉 This week, Marcel Das marks 25 years as the director of Centerdata!

To celebrate, we invited him to the ODISSEI Podcast to discuss the LISS Panel: how it operates, the studies it supports, and why it matters for research.
