Hi! I’m Wendy and I’m an earthquake geologist and science communication specialist. I post about earthquakes, geology, cats, kids and comms.

According to BlueSky I’m a “delightful blend of scientific rigor and domestic chaos” 😁. 🧪⚒️
A women wearing a hardhat and mask stands in a paleoseismic trench holding a scrapping tool. A women in nitrile gloves sits at a lab bench covered with small plastic dishes sorting mineral grains. A smiling women stands next to an orange statue of herself holding a book titled “ Quake Chasers: 15 women shaking up earthquake science” A women in a blue shirt stands behind a lecturn holding a microphone. A TV camera is in the foreground.

I saw a beaver on my walk this morning! At least I think it’s a beaver. (I’m not that kind of scientist). 🦫 🦦

Whoa! I’ve never seen that guy but wow! Yes!
drwendyrocks.bsky.social
Holy crap!!!! That’s it!!!! THANK YOU
drwendyrocks.bsky.social
So far I agree that he resembles all the people y’all have suggested. But I’ve never seen any of those people so I don’t think that’s who I’m thinking of…

My mom just showed me this photo of my great grandfather and he reminds me of someone (like a celebrity?) but I can’t place who and it’s driving me nuts. Help!

According to USGS PAGER, more than a million people may have experienced moderate, strong, or very strong shaking and 10 million more may have experienced light or weak shaking. Some damage is possible.

“There is no such thing as a natural disaster, just natural hazards that impact vulnerable communities and infrastructure,” Bohon said. “We can't stop natural hazards, but we can [decrease our vulnerability] reducing the possibility of a disaster." www.desertsun.com/story/news/n...
How damaging can an earthquake near me be? Map shows threat level across California
The highest hazard areas are near major, active faults. But strong and damaging shaking is "possible anywhere in California."

And it was close to a major fault system.
drwendyrocks.bsky.social
Nope. Just a run of the mill quake. BUT it was beneath an urban area in the middle of the night so a million people felt it.

And just to be clear, this is an aftershock forecast for the M4.3 earthquake near Berkeley on Sept. 22.
drwendyrocks.bsky.social
Remember, earthquake forecasts change with time. The updated USGS forecast for the next week as of 3:30 pm PDT is
🔹 13% chance of M3+ aftershocks
🔹2% chance of M4+ aftershocks
🔹1 in 100 chance (0.8%) that this quake becomes a foreshock to a larger earthquake
