🪐 On this Day of Action to Save #NASA Science, we’re highlighting how space and Earth sciences go hand-in-hand. Scripps Oceanography researchers partner with NASA to study how our planet is changing from sea to space. Here’s an out-of-this-world roundup of some recent projects. 🧵⬇️

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

Here's the assignment folks. Write op-eds for your local papers and campus newspapers too. Just. Say. No. This is a classic authoritarian move and risks the future of higher education and science and innovation in the US. Speak out today. No time to lose. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/02/o...

“The earthquake shook the N coast of Cebu, one of the country's most populous islands, on the night of 30 Sept, jolting many out of their sleep.
It killed at least 68 people and wounded more than 500 others, as homes, buildings and churches collapsed and roads cracked.”

As has been pointed out already in the thread, the most common way to discriminate nuclear tests from earthquakes is the relative lack of shear waves in the explosion and the initial motion of the P waves all being in the same direction for an explosion.

Yes, that joke maybe works a bit too well nowadays..

Yes, I’ve heard that many people don’t realize they are color blind until they take one of those tests!

I have almost no sense of smell and didn’t know this for the longest time, which most people have a difficult time believing.
A test for sulfur in a geology lab, which produced a rotten egg smell for everyone else in the classroom was one of the biggest hints!
christosargyrop.bsky.social
The proper summary of the RECOVER anosmia study is that a large %(×) of the population don't know they have smell impairment and that a history of covid increases the risk by *10%*.

(×) The percentage will depend on cohort selection and technique to ascertain the loss of smell.
