Gift article. Solid tribute to Dr. Goodall. Nicely written summary of her career and life. What an amazing woman she was and a highly productive innovative scientist who changed the lives of so many.
Jane Goodall, primatologist and friend to chimpanzees, dies at 91
She used her global fame to draw attention to the plight of dwindling chimpanzee populations and, more broadly, to the perils of environmental destruction.

I do a comic about ornithological vocabulary for every issue of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's wonderful Living Bird magazine. Here's the latest one, featuring the American Bittern.
A three-panel comic. The first panel is a scrap from a dictionary that says crypsis, noun: patterning or coloration that allows a bird to remain concealed by blending in to its environment. In panel 2, labeled effective crypsis, an american bittern blends in with a marsh full of tall plants. In panel 2, labeled ineffective crypsis, an american bittern fails to blend in among some short plants, next to a wet floor sign, and behind a stop sign.

I’m no medical expert like RFK Jr. But I urge all pregnant women not to take whatever Trump’s mom took.
ICE deporting a 73-year-old grandmother from India who has been in the US 34 years. The level of cruelty & inhumanity is difficult to comprehend. And this from an administration that is filled with and regularly courts voters who claim to be Christians.

‘Not even allowed to say goodbye to her family’: Punjabi grandmother deported from US after 34 years
Advocacy groups called the deportation of Harjit Kaur "inhumane," and said that "it is about the systemic cruelty inflicted on immigrant families".

Similar here: By official stats, my audience here 1/2 size of Xitter after 15 yrs. But I think it represents more actual people (vs bots, trolls, scammers, 'Lovely Ladies waiting for you,' Musk himself, etc)

And beyond question far more engaged in actual response, discussion, etc. vs raw vitriol.

This just isn’t true. My audience is bigger here than it was after 15 year in twitter, and, for mostly better, they are real people, not bots and sock puppets. Do I wish this place was bigger and more ideologically/tinalky diverse, yes. But also we are not fueling Musk.

One of the biggest mistakes left-of-center pundits and influencers made was decamping to Bluesky. They made themselves irrelevant, shrunk their audiences, and dramatically lessened the positive impact they could have on our public debate at the precise time we needed it most.
Disgusting and disrespectful.

The federal government has censored the work of dozens of scientists, including work by my lab, on the impacts of climate change on Acadia National Park. Signs have been removed from Cadillac and Great Meadow. They’re also removing signs about the Wabanaki’s sacred connections to Cadillac.

This looks like an excellent study. The Open access paper is linked in this article. Highlighted concerns about fish, but this issue affects aquatic plants in both lakes and rivers, something I've been quite concerned about in Massachusetts. #botany

I would say yes to both warming up and drying out. Once a vulture leaves its perch it rarely flaps its wings, so they have to be in perfect shape before they take off. They also wait for the ground to warm up so that there's rising air they use to lift them up. I have a friend with a pet vulture.

#OTD 19 September 1991, walkers in the high Ötztal alps on the Italian border, found a body melting out of the ice. It turned out to be the remains of a c.5200 year old man preserved with all his kit.
Of course, it was essential to replicate him in Playmobil.

Jimmy Kimmel should have stuck to acceptable comments, like suggesting that homeless people be executed
I agree. I always try to keep my identifications number twice as high as my observations number. In New England, we have an organized ID-a-thon once a year for plants. I focus on an uncommon species & only work on that for an hour or 2 as you can develop quick responses & see common errors.
No kidding! I've had observers really riled up when i chose orange before I really understood the difference between those two. Now I always choose green, no one seems to get upset. I've learned some observers only post in order to track their own observations, not caring much about accuracy.
No kidding. But we were warned 40 years ago by this brilliant book and many others: "Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business" share.google/OoqQZk6RUSOW...

With federal protections for grizzlies under threat, grizzly bears in the Intermountain West will need more local support. In Montana, a growing cohort of residents is doing just that—helping communities in bear country coexist while making it easier for bears to traverse the landscape. 🌎
