Traveler, book stockpiler, enjoyer of a good board game, martial artist, finance worker. Thinker of not-so-deep thoughts. Kungaloosh!

Also bought a new set of World Book Encyclopedias, so chronicling an entry a day to highlight all the good work.
The videos are definitely rolled, as this one showed a creation date of 14 years ago....

This article had one of the listings of contributors at the beginning so no guesswork here.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: 13 pages on the Sun.

One of those full-of-stuff entries. The pictures are fabulous. Several QR codes to scan for more information which linked to videos on YouTube with even more detail (some of them look like they have been done with student input)

I largely assembled a kind of period outfit for Jollywood this year. The only problem was that my new (somewhat holiday colored) fedora arrived and is a bit large! So I have to try to get a replacement before next week or used hat liner to get it to fit (it came from California so not impossible)

Today's random World Book entry of the day: a short blurb on the satyr.

Shortest article I've had to read in a while. A quick little primer on a satyr, with background on which Gods they followed and the behavior. I also learned the Roman name for satyr is "faun", which does make some sense.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: a little over a page on the Rocky Mountains.

I hope to visit this summer is some of the areas of the Rockies. Large mountains have fascinated me, and this entry is a good primer to this large mountain range. I expected more geology though in the entry.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: a page on the pencil.

A good amount of detail here on the pencil including types and creation of.

My favorite part is that instead of a contributor, it says it was "Critically reviewed by the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association." Amazing.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: 5 pages on Nicaragua.

Similar to last post, these entries give good information on an area I don't know a ton about. I have vague recollections of the Sandinistas from back in the 1980s. I didn't know that volcanic ash makes their soil good for coffee.

More random pics. The article had the noted contributor at the beginning - Robert Coutts, the manager of the Heritage Presentation for Parks Canada (Western and Northern Center). I will say, all the information on the parks in this one made me more likely to visit.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: 20 pages on Manitoba.

One of those massive in depth articles on a place that are such a pleasure to read, this entry gave me a lot about somewhere I've never been. A lot on the history, nature, and overall makeup of this province. Lots on Winnepeg also.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: a short entry about the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

Got to visit both locations this past summer. This entry is a very short bit about both battles + just enough detail to acquaint with the events. Decent summary overall.

This entry was written by Laurel Rasplica Rodd, a professor of Japanese literature now at the University of Colorado. She has several books including a few Japanese translations.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: a bit under two pages about Japanese literature.

This is one of those "cover a lot with a small taste" entries that is a bareboned intro to the subject. The entry covers several periods up to modern. It had ones I expected and lacked some others.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: slightly over a page on Istanbul.

I have been to Turkey, but not to Istanbul, and I've always wanted to go. I was disappointed in the size of this article given the rich history of the city. I would imagine there is more under the Byzantine Empire.

Today's entry author was Daniel Politoske, who was apparently a music professor at the University of Kansas. He died in 2022. He also seems to have written a music textbook that seems very familiar to me - probably from elementary or middle school if I had to guess.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: a short article on Haydn.

I know who Haydn is and some of his works, but didn't know a ton about him, like that he was a close friend of Mozart. He also met a young Beethoven and had him as a pupil. The music world was very connected then apparently.

Today's entry author is Nicholas C Crawford. I found several possible candidates for who this gentleman is, but my leading theory is he is the professor emeritus at Western Kentucky University in geoscience. He may have founded his own hydrology lab as well, with his former students.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: 2 pages on geysers.

A useful topic as I'd like to visit Yellowstone next summer. Assuming the government shutdown ends and we have a proper government. Or that we haven't sold Yellowstone to land speculators. The article gives some good visuals.

It's been a while, will be catching up with World Book fun.

I picked up a book in New England on a whim from the Olmsted NHS and ended up being a great decision. I don't know if I would have known of this book otherwise, but fits well in my vintage England section of my library.

My Colonel Sunchbench outfit will return for an event this week. I have a better beard for ME but still not a good match. Partly because I don't want to spend extreme amounts to get it right, partly because I haven't found an exact solution. I am quite happy with the uniform and accessories tho.

And a few more. The tiger's expression really amuses me.

It's been a while. To catch up, I found a most unusual book at the bookmine. It dates from 1897 and there's not a ton of information to search on it. It seems to be combination learning/adventure about areas of the world with a Professor and three sons travelling. Amazing woodcut pictures in it.

Today's random World Book entry of the day: 28 pages on France.

These big country articles are stunning and hard to do justice with a few images. A lot of history, culture, and detailed maps.

Did not know France was Europe's third largest country by area after Russia and Ukraine.
