The problem with Columbia University having its grant funding pulled is that there was no sort of hearing regarding the alleged antisemitism. Trump could cancel any university grants on a whim with no burden of proof

I mentored a SIP student when I was at the NIH who is now a brilliant MD/PhD. More recently, I've sent my students to the SIP program. I'm saddened to see this great program was cancelled this year without any reason being given

Sen Cruz listed 3400 NSF grants that he labeled as "left-wing ideological crusades". Some grants on the list included those studying cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. Meanwhile, Gallup reported that ~50% of Americans think professors are ethical compared to 8% that say the same about senators

Research published in JAMA found that US healthcare companies spent 95% of their income ($13 bn/yr) on shareholder payouts rather than putting money back into the healthcare system. Perhaps policymakers should require that the healthcare industry help pay the F&A costs for biomedical research

Voters with a college degree were significantly more likely to vote against Trump in each election since 2016 and he lost voters with a graduate degree 2:1. Trump therefore has every incentive to wage war against our university systems and the NIH F&A funding cap was an effectual preemptive strike.
