Absolute best breakdown of this "compact" and its inherent ridiculousness. Thanks!

I've obtained the Trump compact document, let me summarize it for you.
Screen cap of a document reading "COMPACT FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION
INTRODUCTION
American higher education is the envy of the world and represents a key strategic benefit for our
Nation. In turn, the U.S. university system benefits in a variety of ways from its extraordinary relationship
with the U.S. government. These include (i) access to student loans, grant programs, and federal contracts;
(ii) funding for research directly or indirectly; (iii) approval of student and other visas in connection with
university matriculation and instruction; and (iv) preferential treatment under the tax code. To advance the
national interest arising out of this unique relationship, this Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher
Education represents the priorities of the U.S. government in its engagements with universities that benefit
from the relationship. Institutions of higher education are free to develop models and values other than
those below, if the institution elects to forego federal benefits." with bits circled in color and translated to "Nice college you've got there. We hold all your money. It'd be a real shame if anything happened to it."

New paper led by @drlynam.bsky.social on the need for more training in and engagement with open science practices in clinical psych programs. It has been difficult to make progress due to a variety of barriers, including students working in labs uninterested or hostile to these approaches.

I was so unimpressed with this interview. I could go on and on, but simply: there’s no there-there. Just culture war cudgels to the moon. She also uses a deeply weird logic that universities wanted to change, and we gave them a permission structure to do so with our draconian mandates. Hahaha

Love to hear it! I felt similarly about the paper.

This report shows us that 1.7% of N = 919 papers studied were preregistered and 6.0% had a pre-study power analysis. Transparency goes way beyond preregistration... read the paper to find out more!

We have a great new paper taking stock of transparency reporting in the MRI/fMRI literature... "Results call for recentering transparency in reporting practices in MRI and fMRI studies, with direct implications for study generalizability." doi.org/10.1177/2515...

This was a true mess with a ton of AI-generated word salad slop being submitted as preprints. The field owes these moderators a huge thanks for all the work and energy! 🙏👏

Don’t @ me for ignoring the many causes of polarization or the long arc of American sectarian conflict. We all know our history is violent and divided. My point here is narrower: to connect some dots about the deterioration of social trust & cohesion in the US from 9/11/01 to 9/10/25.
dsbarra.bsky.social
Of course polarization has many homegrown causes. But 9/11 intersected with them, and the wars & mistrust that followed created fertile ground. Social media poured gasoline on the fire. 24 years later, political violence feels tragically plausible—an ironic fulfillment of bin Laden’s strategy.
dsbarra.bsky.social
9/11 wasn’t the only accelerant. Commercialization of outrage grew from the affordances of social media— optimized for anger & identity politics. Sectarian divisions follow too from cable news designed to stoke out-group disdain. When politics becomes a spectator bloodsport, division only deepen.
dsbarra.bsky.social
In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, there was video of bin Laden saying that al-Qaeda’s goal was to provoke America into overreaction and internal conflict. Wars in Iraq & Afghanistan, civil-liberty fights at home, and the mistrust that followed all deepened social divides.
dsbarra.bsky.social
On the anniversary of 9/11, I’m struck by how little discussion links yesterday’s tragic act of political violence with the attacks 24 years ago. To me, the throughline is clear: bin Laden sought to divide America, draw us into costly wars, and erode social cohesion. We are living in that long game.
