Yes and - I really think everyone has lost patience with reading almost anything, esp when it's so easy to find pithy distillates in a range of forms. Even most actual essays seem to exist mostly to serve as the basis for podcasts and soc med posts.

TFW it sinks in that no one actually reads anything. Not when you cognitively recognize this, but when you viscerally understand it and know it to be true.

My latest TR column, discussing progress+ambition in consumer health-esp convergence around "personal health OS." Excited about much of this work, but disappointed by continued reductionist view of health as metric optimization timmermanreport.com/2025/10/consum… @alicecallahan.bsky.social

I will never forget the day - actually the late evening- they traded Seaver to Reds just before midnight. Devastating.

Each of these companies should be free to fire employees for performance. That can be subjective! No one is entitled to million-dollar paychecks for big news & entertainment jobs.

But when decisions are made to hire and fire to appease a vengeful ruler that’s different. That’s autocracy at work.

In addition to whatever this says about wellness, it also speaks to where the audience is perceived to be - it looks like if you want to reach most people impactfully, you need high impact video clips; suspect @zekeemanuel.bsky.social will likely add Youtube, also some kind of podcast...

Japan has a wrestling camp for kids where at the end they have a show match in front of their parents to show off what they learned.

Thought you'd enjoy this.

For anyone who, like me, grew up on Woody Allen (and can place lines like "The moose...mingled" & characters like Virgil Starkwell, his interview with Bari Weiss on @thefp.com Honestly pcast will prove, like so many of his films, irresistible - www.thefp.com/p/woody-alle... .

The film director talks about Soon-Yi, Trump, the Knicks, and why he doesn’t care what you think of him.

Loved this reflective @thebulwark.com essay, “right piece, wrong puzzle” by @jvl.bsky.social. open.substack.com/pub/thebulwa... Connects to themes of contingency I discussed here timmermanreport.com/2024/08/two-... & persisting amid contingency (MCU origin) here timmermanreport.com/2024/05/succ...

... I'm not sure it's always so obvious to predict which projects are "most promising" - a fact that tends to reveal itself with narrative elegance only after the fact.
dshaywitz.bsky.social
... I would note that there's a very long traditional of exceptional startups being birthed during terrible economic times for the industry the startup is in, and perhaps even oppy to concentrate v best talent around most promising projects... although, as you know if you read my stuff...
dshaywitz.bsky.social
What's especially maddening about all this is that the underlying science is *amazingly promising* - there have never been more powerful tools better suited to tackling terrible diseases - but like the quote from Right Stuff goes, "No bucks, no Buck Rodgers." That said...
dshaywitz.bsky.social
and I also worry about impact on attracting future talent to the industry, as noted here

Ofc not perfect comparison, & presumably knowledge workers in lifescience still have options that, while perhaps not ideal, are still more than what seems to be available to many who have lost blue-collar jobs. Also: should be "pointy-head" not "pointed-head" elites. No idea where phrase comes from.
dshaywitz.bsky.social
@simonbayly.bsky.social while I wouldn't want to carry comparison too far, in some ways (& perhaps this is intentional from an Administration keen to punish pointed-head elites) this feels like white collar version of blue collar despair Springsteen & others describe-just change a few words...

It sounds like UK suffered a few recent, acute hits; situation in Boston is portrayed w bleak accuracy in Globe article you link to below - not just the downsizing that's documented, but perhaps more concerning: the massive hit to the usual sense of optimism here - all despite v promising science.

This puts discussions of the London biotech ecosystem into context. Boston is really suffering.
