My dad (a longtime high school math teacher in rural Utah) is constantly bemoaning this. Rural white American culture broadly treats being "stupid" almost as a badge of honor--"I was doing productive things with my life instead of math".
There's also a fairly conscious effort by low and middle class nonimmigrant whites to avoid the appearance of striving (bc thats how rich white Americans appear from the outside), but that backfires into poorer outcomes

There's no way Elon Musk and Trump stay together it's like putting two flaming porcupines in the same room and feeding them charismatic self-help books until they reach the asymptote of narcissism. A juicy lovers to enemies quarrel is just over the horizon...
