I had fun at a Hanukkah gathering last night. In some circles, this is apparently controversial. (Trying to post it so the image actually shows up this time)
5 panel black and white comic. Title: "Hammering it Home." 1. A family lights a menorah at the table with treats and gifts. A random man butts in and says: "You know, gift-giving is only a Hanukkah custom due to its proximity to Christmas. In truth, it's a minor holiday. It's not a big deal." 2. Several kids play dreidel at a gathering. The same man butts in: "Nice pluralistic celebration here. You do know that the Maccabees were religious fundamentalists who hated more 'liberal' Jews, yes? Mattathias literally slew one with a sword. ...also dreidel is based on an old gambling game." 3. A large crowd is at a nightly Hannukah gathering at a community center. The same guy yells: "The rabbis in the Talmud invented the story about oil miraculously lasting eight days. They wanted to obscure the uncomfortable truth, that it commemorates a bloody war!" 4. A crowd gathers at a public menorah lighting. The guy yells, "Do you turn out in these numbers for MAJOR Jewish holidays? Or only the MINOR ones?" 5. Temple Beth Shalom is celebrating "Chanukah in the Park" with a live band and joyful attendees. The guy stands up and shouts, "You people have no business being this happy! Stop enjoying the thing! STOP IT!!"

I would add Antiochus wasnt exactly cosmopolitan. Like taking over from Alexander "just do whatever you want so long as you pay taxes" the Great and announcing that only the Greek gods were acceptable isnt really the definition of cosmopolitan.

Hanukkah History! The Maccabees were a small band of Jewish fighters who liberated Israel from occupying Syrian Greeks. Around 167 BCE, Antiochus defiled the Temple in Jerusalem and banned Jewish practice. The Maccabees won a 3-yr campaign to clean & rededicate the Temple. #Hanukkah25.
