(also worth saying in general, this is also to protect clients! e.g., if after 2 months the commission isn’t completed, the client has a written record on the actual transaction showing paypal that i agreed they’re entitled to a full refund from me! it just helps to keep everyone accountable!)

also, unfortunately paypal is just my only option right now! a lot of other payment processors aren’t internationally accessible, canadian E-transfer will doxx my legal name, and i want to add Wise in the future but i have problems to untangle with it first. i wish there were better alternatives :(

thats true, but i personally like all the information to be visible to me, the client AND paypal! e.g., i include “digital art product” so that if a client tried to do a chargeback on the basis that they didn’t get physical art, my invoice has a record saying we all know it’s digitally delivered :-)

exactly!! like, theres people in sales that earn commission 😭 i think it’d be pretty bonkers if paypal flagged and autobanned users for any mention of ‘commission’ within invoices or other business transactions like g&s…..they ARE awful but that would nuke more than just artists 😭

ok thats it sorry im a yapper. just wanted to say it if anyone else panics abt this too

going forward i might change stuff like ‘fullbody’ to ‘FB’ on invoices cuz the arbitrary bans related to nsfw ARE a real problem and using the word ‘body’ does make me nervous. but the word commission should not
October 23, 2025 at 10:07 AM
im just like. kinda tired of seeing this. cuz every single time i do i panic all over again. and i think “dont even say commission in invoices” is kind of a wild takeaway from whatever incident that ALSO involved nsfw (total bullshit rule obviously) or misuse of f&f (less bullshit rule)
October 23, 2025 at 10:03 AM
and ok paypals tos rules and moderation ARE dogshit. and i could be wrong. but i think if this is happening its not the word itself its bc artists doing commissions online are probably more likely to also be breaking tos in some way (valid or not) while they happen to Also use that word
October 23, 2025 at 10:00 AM
i feel like as artists we’re so used to ‘commission’ in our specific context that we can forget that sooooooo many other professions also get paid by commission. theres no reason for just the word ’commission’ appearing on an invoice to lead to automatic bans. is this rlly a widespread phenomenon?

like if it makes u feel safer ofc avoid it but. i use invoices. i want everything written out correctly for both parties to reference. i dont wanna lie/omit info on invoices. this type of post always freaks me out but ‘commission’ IS a completely normal business word to use in a business transaction
October 23, 2025 at 9:52 AM
and ik ppl use f&f bc paypal fees are atrocious so like. Yes if you use f&f for getting paid make sure NO business words like ‘commission’ or nsfw words or other tos-breaking things are in there or u will get in trouble. but i dont think the takeaway is “dont ever say commission even on invoices’
October 23, 2025 at 9:48 AM
like i dont have receipts dont take my word for it and ofc everyone SHOULD hate paypal but. if you take payments on f&f and you or clients use the word commission…….i dont think getting in trouble has anything to do with artists its bc f&f isn’t allowed to be used for business transactions
