It reminds me of the focus on "authenticity" in, for instance, music in 90's - bands weren't seen as worthy of artistic respect if they were "commercial" or "sold out"
But I think this was mostly a NA tic - other cultures are more tolerant of transparent commercially-driven music like K-pop
