They don’t call it a “gifted” program around here — our district wisely changed the name to something more neutral to avoid the exact kind of situation you experienced — but it was a lifesaver for her. I don’t doubt kids still feel left out, though, and that is heartbreaking.

My oldest is a lot like me when I was a kid in that she learns pretty much everything the first time she hears it. Unfortunately, that also means the way classes endlessly reiterate and review old material bores her to tears. This, coupled with severe ADHD, triggers disruptive behavior.

Every time I am unfortunate enough to be in an American shopping mall I make sure to peer into the Hot Topic long enough to verify that it’s still about 40 percent Zim shirts
