Adrenaline still pumping from seeing Sons of the Neon Night because it's so bad and all I want is for everyone to see it so I can chat with everyone about how bad it is. Pretty sure the movie was finished using AI. Legitimising rich boy Juno Mak was a mistake.

It's an amazing career-spanning programme with some deeper cuts like 1987's Heartbeat 100. Many of the films are also being shown on 35mm including the Wong Kar-wais, Green Snake, Irma Vep, and Comrades, Almost a Love Story. www.qagoma.qld.gov.au/cinema/progr...

Hilarious that, by the traditional definition of the term, none of these are New Wave films nor are they directed by New Wave directors.

The licensing requirements for these are apparently quite fragile so I can't really say at the moment.
dylancheung.bsky.social
I think I can now say I did (eventually) do new subs for this, but they probably won't make a big deal out of it because of how strict Shout are being. I was also told in passing some additional clean up was done to the picture.

Privileged to be on the first of the Golden Princess catalogue to hit the UK, Ringo Lam's seminal City on Fire. The booklet features a piece where I detail Lam's personal and professional journey up to that point while also getting into what exactly Golden Princess are. (I also redid the subtitles)

Arrow’s site has this up for preorder now and it confirms it will have all the SF video/audio extras AND the archival talent interviews from the old UK DVD (which SF does not have). It’ll also have an essay from @dylancheung.bsky.social which is great. So hands down a better release

Arrow already smoking Shout Factory just by understanding that when you have Tony Stella art for a film, you use the Tony Stella art for the film.

I bought this (among a slew of other things) at the start of the year specifically for the Japanese making of when I was working on a commentary on the Peacock King Blu-ray, which unfortunately never happened.

Check out this chunky boy Chinese bootleg Peacock King DVD set. It comes with the two Hong Kong live action movies in both HK and Japanese versions, Japanese making of, CD soundtrack, HK and Taiwanese cuts of The Kid from Tibet, and the anime adaptations ripped from Italian DVDs.

A production of Regal Films, who later sued Wong for breach of contract, it was also reported by newspapers to be a sequel to As Tears Go By. We'll never know, but it's likely ideas from it evolved into Chungking Express and Fallen Angels.

Seeing this photo do the rounds today: Wong Kar-wai's Mong Kok House on Fire commencing production in 1993, a movie meant to wrap in two months. The cast included Lau Ching-wan who has otherwise not worked with Wong. Supposedly inspired by Kinji Fukusaku's House on Fire (1986).
Lau Ching-wan, Faye Wong (Shirley Wong), Brigitte Lin, Tony Leung Kar-fai, and Wong Kar-wai commencing production of Mong Kok House on Fire in 1993.

Also something to be said this is a Taiwanese production.

Teaser for Deadline, the latest from Kiwi Chow (Beyond the Dream, Revolution of Our Times). I'm not completely sold on Chow as an artist, but he's undoubtedly one of the most pertinent working Hong Kong filmmakers right now. This looks good, though.

An unknown screenwriter going by Guer claims they're the real writer of Blossoms Shanghai, accusing Wong Kar-wai and writer Qin Wen of exploitation and bullying, even posting audio recordings as proof. It's gotten so bad the production issued a statement about respecting the rights of creators.
dylancheung.bsky.social
Guer has been posting about their experience on Weixin since 2023 but it's only recently gotten attention. During the production, they were diagnosed with ALS and this is why they've gone public. Even with the audio, there's a lot of hearsay, but this recent non-denial is telling.
dylancheung.bsky.social
During the production, Guer was hired as Wong Kar-wai's personal assistant, even cooking for him, and their work as writer was uncredited. One time Qin asked Wong why keep Guer around and he allegedly said, 'A few thousand for an assistant and a writer, what a bargain!'
dylancheung.bsky.social
Qin was apparently unaware of the historic events upon which the series was based and made minimal changes or additions to Guer's work before putting her name on it. She belittled Guer constantly, questioning their purpose on the production and calling them Wong Kar-wai's dog.
dylancheung.bsky.social
Supposedly, when it was still a movie, the project hit a dead end because Wong Kar-wai didn't like Qin Wen's script. Guer pitched an idea Wong liked and was tasked with rewriting it from scratch, conducting meticulous research to do so.

Interesting regarding AI and Kpop Demon Hunters 1/2
Artists Against Generative Al
15 AGAINST
Andrew Unferdorfer • 14h • G
A Redditor caught this. Looks like a possible instance where a translation bot fabricated pro-Al misinformation and that got picked up and amplified as real news.
The misinformation states that ChatGPT was used by the creators of KPop Demon Hunters to help them write the song "Soda Pop".
Problem is, when somebody went back to the original source in Korean, IT DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT USING AI OR CHATGPT!
The article was translated with Al, and it looks like the Al itself made up this complete lie, and the truly terrifying thing is how nobody questioned it until this one person went digging for the truth.
We launched the OpenAl Korea office yesterday!
Fav moment from the launch celebration was hearing singer/songwriter Vince share that ChatGPT helped him write "Soda Pop" from KPop Demon Hunters! It apparently gave him ideas to make it sound "more bubbly"
OpenAl

Tweet's now deleted, but here's a bit further down the web of this:
The original article this was sourced from, from Korea JoongAng Daily, says this:
"Prior to the unofficial event, producer Vince also spoke with Business Director Oliver Jay at OpenAl's official launch event. Vince stated, "We sometimes use ChatGPT to generate inspiration when producing K-pop," and also mentioned that Al technology is already being utilized in K-pop."
The thing is, that's only in the English translation.
The Korean article it's translated from doesn't mention KPop Demon Hunters using Al at all. So, how did it get there? Well, the English article, as confirmed by a note at the bottom, was translated using generative Al. So, since different language versions of the article contradict themselves, there's a nonzero chance that this entire debacle is an Al hallucination ITSELF, spawned from an Al translation
