And the likely target market for the app is the kind of person who wants books to provide hacks they can use in their hustle. Like how Tony Soprano used his therapy insights to be a better crook. If you’d like the latest Pynchon summed up in two thousand words, you’re missing the point.

“I learned this from Woody. He said I sung it better than anybody.”

In May 1961, Bob Dylan returned to his home state and basically showed off about his relationship with Woody Guthrie.

Still excited to hear better quality versions of the material I already know. Two things I would have loved were: complete 61 Gaslight set as Terri Thal had said the original tape still sounds great; complete Town Hall 63 set as it’s one of my favourites.

On the latest episode of the Dylan Revisited podcast,
hear me talk about how the hope in the title track of The Times They Are a-Changin' is not matched by the rest of the record’s darker narratives of injustice and heartbreak.

As long as it has an epic What Goes On, I’m easy.

The Bootleg Series Vol. 18 is coming on October 31st with home tapes, live recordings and outtakes from Bob Dylan's early career.

To get in the mood, I'm revisiting unofficial bootlegs from this period, starting with May 1961's Minnesota Party Tape.

So weird that he recorded New Orleans Rag during the Times sessions. Read the room Bob.

I revisited The Bootleg Series Vol. 2 and enjoyed its selection of outtakes and alternate versions from Bob Dylan's mid-60s-70s

Even if much of the material has since appeared in subsequent Bootleg collections.

My three-thread revisit starts here: bsky.app/profile/dyla...

The first volume of The Bootleg Series covers three remarkable years in Bob Dylan’s early career where he performed his songs solo.

The Bootleg Series Vol. 2 takes in the next decade where Dylan and his new musical allies explored an electrifying range of sounds. 🧵

While Bootleg Vol. 2’s alternate takes of songs from Bob Dylan’s mid-60s electric era were interesting, they lacked the mystique of the outtakes from Blood on the Tracks.

The collection’s unreleased New York versions from that album were a glimpse into a parallel universe. 🧵

Ultimately it was too early in my Dylan journey for the alternate versions to really register. I didn't have the context or stories behind their creation. So I was all about vol. 1 and the wealth of new standalone songs.

Obviously a lot different now but we also have so many other sources.

When I first got this collection in the early 90s, I didn't appreciate the significance of those alternate versions.

I knew Tangled from Biograph and Idiot Wind from Hard Rain, but hadn't yet heard Blood on the Tracks - nor knew anything about the album's background.

One of those I revisit from time to time & always find myself thinking ‘I’d forgotten how good this is’ it was a revelation hearing the BOTT tracks for the first time , esp Idiot Wind, the tonal shift from the ‘official’ version was remarkable & I couldn’t wait to hear the rest of the songs.

You’re going to love that song because it’s great in all forms. So makes sense that whichever one you hear first becomes the one for you.
dylanrevisited.bsky.social
I like that. When I listen to an NY only version of BotT, I get why Dylan felt it needed something different.

I think the album TUIB has a unique sound to it, whereas the New York version sounds like … the New York versions of all the songs.

So if we could only keep one in a time capsule, I go with the album take.
