ALL YOU NEED IS KILL (2026)

I'm not as sour on this one as others I've talked to, but can't say I loved it either. As usual Studio 4°C's style is on point and I love the action scenes. The best way to describe my issue is that the pacing kind of just strolls along, despite the setting's intensity.

He Got Game (1998)

Not my fav Spike Lee Joint, but also not bad. Beyond presenting its themes like it's tossing a brick at you, I generally do not like Denzel's character in this - for reasons that spoil the ending. I think the dilemma presented is interesting, just not a fan of how it resolved.

We have more to watch but it is sad to see the finish line so soon. I'm excited to have some larger final thoughts on UC soon though.

A big point that comes to mind is that while F91 & Victory are "later UC", the time they were made make them feel so separate that they may as well be alt. universe.

So far, no real thoughts from me about Üso right now. He feels more gung-ho about using the Gundam than previous MCs, but I don't think that's true as much as the setting framing it differently.

Maybe he changes later on but it's more that he doesn't get the hole he's digging for himself.

Thanks to that setting though, it feels like it has such a strong unique identity to the previous series we've watched. Primarily, there's a sense of groundedness it has because of the guerilla warfare framing that really highlights the desperation from the League Militaire.

We're officially two weeks into watching Victory Gundam! Consensus so far from 6 episodes is that I really dig it.

It's definitely been a slow burn so far both from staying in one setting for some time + the initial flashback approach, but it's absolutely to the show's benefit.

PictoQuest: The Cursed Grids (2019)

First game of 2026! It was very eh. The idea of a RPG w/ Picross combat could be neat, but the execution here is just not captivating at all. I didn't really engage with it nor the items.

One boon it has tho is that the Picross art here really is incredible.

Umamusume: Cinderella Gray S2 (2025)

Mostly a repeat my S1 thoughts. The characters and OST are still great, but this season felt more like a "holding period" until S3 happens. This had vital races, but the framing did them a disservice imo.

Quit the AI bull and give us Dicta Striker Cygames

What Is Obscenity?: The Story of a Good for Nothing Artist and Her Pussy (2015)

A really great read and not long either! Rokudenashiko's does a great job of hitting the right tone about her arrest and career, at both humorous and sobering. Reminds me a lot of what I like in Box Brown's work.

Lupin the 3rd: The Immortal Bloodline (2025)

My first time watching one of the Koike films, it was clearly not his best. Felt all over the place, with two notably exciting & well animated fights. More curious than excited for the next one though.

Weird they chose this for US theaters honestly.

Better late than never: here's a 2026 Media Thread!

Actually pretty happy with how well I kept up with 2025 seeing as it was my first time, so we're back at it again this year

Example of one of those nice scenes. I think maybe it's better to say that F91's not amazingly animated, but has plenty of great stills and has flashes of great direction.

There's something about how smooth the flow from each major point in this clip that makes me love it.
January 8, 2026 at 5:21 PM
Well F91's out of the way, so we're now in the home stretch! Hathaway 2's soon, but besides that there's only one UC show to get to: Victory.

I'm excited for this one after years of stories about its bleakness, but a bit sad that the end is in sight. (also I had to fit this image somewhere, shush)
January 8, 2026 at 11:47 AM
Didn't expect to have this many words on F91 but it all leads to a longer story crunched into a 2hr timeframe. It has multiple flaws, but it also has an incredible opening third of the movie and a stellar voice cast.

F91 isn't great but god damn is the possibility endearing to think about.
January 8, 2026 at 11:47 AM
He's a great blend of the three main UC protags but I wish he had time to make himself more distinct. Same for Cecily too - her story & the Crossbone Vanguard are interesting but messy w/o the extra bits to expand the nuances.

All of it reminds me a lot of the complaints with the 0079 trilogy.
January 8, 2026 at 11:47 AM
F91 is def. not a looker (it has some nice scenes here & there) but it sure does what it can to make its main cast endearing.

For example, I really love the movie's portrayal of Seabook's nuance btwn his frustration w/ the war, his family dynamics & his instinct to jump to action when needed.
January 8, 2026 at 11:47 AM
We sadly couldn't postpone long enough to watch the 2nd one in time, but hey now we get to see F91 sooner!

This entire rewatch gave a whole flood of memories back. Mostly about how much I wish this was the series Tomino wanted to make and not a movie, but simply how good it is too.
January 8, 2026 at 11:47 AM
Hathaway also has one of my favorite fights in the UC series ever too, but you spend way more time engaged with each conversation traded btwn Hathaway, Gigi & Ken and the film is all the better for it.

In fact, the weakest part of this is probably the final battle but even that's nitpicking.
January 8, 2026 at 10:49 AM
Right after NT was Hathaway 1 - such a superb film 4 years later (wild it's already that old)

Hathaway 1 also highlights one of my favorite parts of Gundam & mecha shows in general - intense character dialogue (supplemented w/ viewer knowledge) can feed just as great tension as a good skirmish.
January 8, 2026 at 10:49 AM
Its attempt to highlight the purpose of Cyber Newtypes post-Unicorn is interesting but it doesn't do enough with it in its runtime, while its finale just feels like a worse version of Unicorn's.

I also wasn't a fan of Zoltan (or the rest of the cast either) but you get the picture by now. NT bad.😑
January 8, 2026 at 10:04 AM
New year, time to come back with a triple threat of UC Gundam movies! Sadly, the first at bat sure does suck.

Narrative feels like a film that feels unnecessary. Unicorn ends at a perfect point, NT doesn't do act as an epilogue in a sufficient way nor does it try to actually expand on that story.

Let's Go Karaoke! (2025)

Final thing of the year! Has some off vibes, but I still really liked this. Does a good job blending humor w/ the weight to the troubles of a middle schooler, even in a yakuza-adjacent setting.

Loved the music choices too, been listening to X-JAPAN all day now

Voxelgram (2019)

Picross 3D is probably in my top 10 DS titles, so this was a blast to poke at throughout the last couple of months. It's missing a couple of niceties and personality that has, but the content and controls are all there. I may need to give 2 at shot now 🤔

Little Locked Rooms (2024)

This was a fun one, but way too difficult for me. It surprisingly does a lot visually to punch above its weight (the animations & camerawork for mystery reveals in particular are really nice) but dropping you in the middle of the crime scene with much to go with sucks.
January 1, 2026 at 10:40 PM
Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence (2011)

This one was fine enough, if a bit lacking. Loved the ski resort/mountain setting (felt perfect for the season), but the mystery kind of just breezes by w/ no effort to get you interested in the cast much either. What's with all the fat gags here too?
