Max Amann, head of the Franz Eher Verlag and Hitler's publisher, is said to have suggested the much shorter "Mein Kampf" ("My Struggle").

The invitation is much appreciated, but a peaceful island experience is the opposite of what I'm looking for," Musk wrote. "Understood, I will see you on st Barth, the ratio on my island might make Talilah uncomfortable," Epstein responded.

In that sense, Sinners's vampires are the MCU, but they're also all the tech freaks who used to live on the wrong side of the bay from Oakland that want to upload their consciousness into the cloud, give their brains to LLMs, and live forever together in and as one big social computer (so many of whom have, in the last decade, found their way into the Town). They're why Buddy Guy, at the end, says that he's lived long enough, which is the movie's statement on what art needs to be real and powerful: an ending. And it's why the movie is called Sinners, in a way: If Capital says "Go forever! Never die! Never be satisfied!" as the goal of life-in a movie which is a standalone, will have no sequels, and simply satisfies you and then is over-you know who else tells you to live forever and never die? The opening scene of the movie suggests the artist will rejoin the church and put away art; note, in the end, that he has not and did not, at the peril of his immortal soul. Artists don't necessarily always know what they were doing when they make art, nor do they always, or often, tell the press what they know; they sometimes are even wrong about the thing they've made. I don't think Coogler exactly set out to make a Movie About Capitalism, and not only because he has said he didn't; after all, Coogler has told the press that he thinks Wakanda Forever is good, which it is not. But there are two ways to theorize capitalism: One is to read Marx, but the other is to work for a living. I think Coogler-who has worked for a living—made a movie about how capitalism kills and eats culture, and also LLMs, and also about working for a living for parasitic studio vampires. I think that because I watched Sinners, a really great movie that is better than One Battle After Another, or whatever movie you liked more last year, and were wrong to do so.

Nadella opts instead to say, "it flattens the entire information flow." What he is describing, but also performing, during this manic monologue, is dehumanization, which is one of the core tenets of the authoritarian personality. The marvel of Al, for him, is that it has removed the necessity for interpersonal communication which would remind him periodically of his belonging to a corporation, which is a community of human beings, one premised explicitly on the pursuit of their collective flourishing. It has also, through that alienation, allowed him to transfigure their captured labor into a process of automation which he controls and can claim as both his property and the substance of his leadership over them.

What Fink and Nadella describe as the present impediment to "long-term scalable" diffusion is not a marketing chasm so much as a control chasm. They are no longer strategizing for voluntary adoption by those who come to recognize the technology's utility by electively applying it to the problems they face. They are planning how to cross the chasm by forced adoption. People will use it because they are told they "have to" by their employer, by their school, by their president, or by the police state. Of course, corporate executives have never been immune to insulating themselves from rank-and-file employees, undervaluing their labor, nor stealing their ideas. But what's novel about Nadella's narrative is that it positions Al as essentially a machine for enabling bad leadership. It's no wonder Al entrepreneurs and investors are flirting with authoritarianism. The technology they are developing creates the same kinds of bubbles of sycophancy and narcissism which are inevitably constructed around tyrants.

I made the mistake of leaving my avocado tree—which I grew from a pit and have had for years—out on the porch when temps dipped a bit too low for a bit too long and it took major frost damage. A lot of it has turned black. It lost all its leaves. It appears very sad right now

But look

Since Trump and his administration famously have a tendency to back off when the going gets tough, it would follow that a good way to keep them out of Philadelphia is to raise the costs that would come with an invasion. But Cherelle Parker, the city's mayor, has a different idea. She seems wedded to a head-in-the-sand approach, recently telling WHYY's Cheri Gregg that she prefers to avoid confrontation with the president "to protect my city of Philadelphia.”

We’ll watch the odd scambaiting video and I’m struck by how this is using *exactly* the same approach as many scams featured in those—fear tactics, thought-terminating urgency wrt time, lack of clarity about the mechanics of what is actually being demanded

Many Americans horrified by The Homeland's agents rampaging through whole communities, seizing children, perp-walking half-naked old men, and detaining whoever they feel like, with or without charges, all while enjoying "absolute immunity" have settled on an interesting term: "occupation." This designation is as correct as it is unoriginal—a fact more Americans would do well to remember. ICE has contracted surveillance tools that, according to Joseph Cox at 404 Media, allow it to "track phones without a warrant and follow their owners home or to their employer." These tools, reportedly deployed across Minneapolis, were not created in America, but in Israel, still another Homeland, enforcing the longest "occupation" in modern history. Thus, the citizens of Minnesota have, as American taxpayers, subsidized an occupation overseas that is effectively a laboratory for their own.

When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people. They ate more frequently than the poor but sober Italians. Jews are rich and help each other through a secret web of mutual assistance. However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. Fascist governments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy.
