Anchitherium sensibly responding to the current situation. Btw, a lot of early horses seem to have big preorbital glands and more people should draw that.

Tonight’s flocking-together #Paleostream was nothing but synapsids, three gorgonopsians in a row (Dinogorgon, Viatkogorgon, and Njalila) and then the Pleistocene South American horse Hippidion. #paleoart #sciart #permian #pleistocene

Illustration of the African middle-miocene Elasmotheriine Victoriaceros kenyensis, made for the Victoriaceros Wikipedia page. The few existing reconstructions of this rhino give it a prominent nasal horn, while I depicted it with a large callus-like growth. #miocene #paleoart #sciart

A scene from middle Miocene Slovakia: a Pseudocyon rears up in surprise as a defensive mother Parvorhinus charges it, protective of her clueless calf. Parvorhinus, named a few years ago, was one of the smallest rhinos of the #Miocene and makes for a fun first sketch of 2026! #paleoart #sciart

The first flocking #Paleostream of 2026: speculative new discoveries that we hope to see this year. Intermediate/half-way-there pterosaur, ancestral bat, late-surviving radiodont, and arthropleura-size house centipede were the chosen prompts, which were all very fun to ponder and draw.

Starting off 2026 with a commissions announcement! I’ve drawn a few commissioned pieces in the past, but haven’t widely advertised it before. If you would like to fund custom-made drawings from a young artist, contact me and we can discuss all the details. #commissions #paleoart #wildlifeart

For my last #NearbyNature2025, I’ve drawn one of the rarest birds in North America: the Whooping Crane. They are the tallest bird on the continent at nearly 5 feet, a bit taller than the more abundant Sandhill Crane. On this New Year’s Eve, I saw these magnificent birds for the first time. #alabama

My reconstruction of the Toronto Subway Deer (formerly Torontoceros hypogaeus), after a paper published this October looked at its dna and found it to be within Odocoileus, potentially a more steppe-adapted cousin of Mule Deer. #pleistocene #paleoart #sciart #canada #deer

Easily the largest drawing I’ve made this year.

The finished size chart of most of the fauna from the Mammoth Site, a Pleistocene fossil locality within an ancient sinkhole in South Dakota that preserves dozens of entrapped mammoths alongside scattered remains of other animals. #pleistocene #paleoart #sciart #Paleostream

Quick sketch of Amphicyon confucianus (minus the fur) as it may have rested just before fossilization. A complete skeleton of this species exists (Shanghai Nat. History Museum has a photo of it), but it hasn’t been described as far as I know. #paleoart #sciart #miocene

For November’s #NearbyNature2025, I’ve drawn the Pecan Weevil (Curculio caryae). In the same genus as more famous oak weevils, this species lays eggs in pecans and other hickory nuts. It is native to the southeast, but is a notable agricultural pest. #bugs #sciart #wildlife #alabama

Rien Poortvliet has tons of beautiful forested paintings, such as these featuring Wild Boar.

Sketches from a Pleistocene-themed flocking #Paleostream! Voay robustus from Madagascar, the last species of Albanerpeton in Italy (scared by a Raccoon Dog), Mekosuchus trying to hunt a pig, and the face of the giant otter Enhydriodon. #pleistocene #holocene #paleoart #sciart

Yesterday’s flocking #paleostream sketches, in shadowy forms: Lepidodendron, Baryonyx, Champsosaurus, and Genyornis. No I don’t have a favorite. #paleoart #pleistocene #cretaceous #paleozoic

If any of y’all have the chance to visit this exhibition, please go see it, it’s genuinely some of the most breathtaking art I have ever seen. In a “how is an earthly being capable of creating something like this” sort of way. #art #botany

Colored sketch of the newly-validated Nanotyrannus lancensis, though it’s not having a good time. This baby has found itself grappled by a particularly ambitious Didelphodon, after wandering a little too far from home. #backinhell #paleoart #sciart #cretaceous

A quick doodle for the final day of #GarWeek, a large melanistic Alligator Gar cruises underneath an oblivious Ocelot somewhere in the bayous of Louisiana. A scene that may have happened several times in the past, and may continue to occur if both species are valued and protected. #wildlife #sciart

Tonight’s flocking #Paleostream sketches (it’s been a hot minute): Nanotyrannus in the woods, Pteranodon over Protosphyraena, Phosphorosaurus + sturgeon lunch, and Helicoprion. #paleoart #sciart #cretaceous #permian #backinhell
