Anchitherium sensibly responding to the current situation. Btw, a lot of early horses seem to have big preorbital glands and more people should draw that.
A simple, pencil-drawn two-scene comic on paper. The first scene is of a stick-figure Anchitherium giving the middle-hoof to some rows of data-center supercomputers in front of it. Bold, italicized text above it reads: “To hell with the bots!” The second scene is a front view of the Anchitherium’s face, now much more detailed, as it opens its mouth wide in a scream while explosive puffs/jets of musky mist come from the scent glands on both sides of its face. Tonight’s flocking-together #Paleostream was nothing but synapsids, three gorgonopsians in a row (Dinogorgon, Viatkogorgon, and Njalila) and then the Pleistocene South American horse Hippidion. #paleoart #sciart #permian #pleistocene

The bottom gorgonopsian is a bust of the newly named Njalila, just yawning. The two Hippidion that take up most of the paper are a pair of stallions fighting in the open habitats of the high Andes. One of them is in the process of kicking the other’s snout, likely breaking the long nasal bone characteristic of this genus. In the distance, a Spectacled Bear stands up to get a better view of the battle.

The upper lip is hooked downwards like a Black Rhino, due to it having a similar browse-dominated diet. The end of its snout sports a callus-like pad instead of a more traditionally rhino-like horn. The presence of a nasal horn is briefly stated in V. kenyensis’s description, but not elaborated upon. This is a common theme in miocene rhino descriptions, wherein a rugosity on the nasal bones is stated to be horn-bearing without a detailed analysis of any of these structures (from what I can find at least). Therefore, I decided to be more experimental with it.

The first flocking #Paleostream of 2026: speculative new discoveries that we hope to see this year. Intermediate/half-way-there pterosaur, ancestral bat, late-surviving radiodont, and arthropleura-size house centipede were the chosen prompts, which were all very fun to ponder and draw.

In the top left is a transitional/ancestral pterosaur, still rather lagerpetid-like and possessing a relatively short fourth finger, but taking off with a quad launch by the forelimbs. In the top right is a very shrew-like ancestral bat, holding a click beetle larva in its hand and jaws. In the bottom left is a vaguely horseshoe-crab-like late-surviving radiodont, crawling along the Carboniferous mud while a smaller Microsaur inspects it. In the bottom right an arthropleura-size, aquatic House Centipede rears up and to the side after being spooked by a large Sebecid, somewhere in Paleocene Africa.

For my last #NearbyNature2025, I’ve drawn one of the rarest birds in North America: the Whooping Crane. They are the tallest bird on the continent at nearly 5 feet, a bit taller than the more abundant Sandhill Crane. On this New Year’s Eve, I saw these magnificent birds for the first time. #alabama

My reconstruction of the Toronto Subway Deer (formerly Torontoceros hypogaeus), after a paper published this October looked at its dna and found it to be within Odocoileus, potentially a more steppe-adapted cousin of Mule Deer. #pleistocene #paleoart #sciart #canada #deer

Its thick neck is curved upwards and turned towards the viewer, such that its head is in front view. The body and neck are overall plain pale brown, with a white throat patch right below the head. The top of the snout is pale, but the top of the head above the eyes is much darker and nearly rusty reddish in color. The ears perked up behind the antlers are quite large. The antlers themselves are wide-spanning and have tall, curled upwards tips, in a branching pattern similar to Mule Deer.

For November’s #NearbyNature2025, I’ve drawn the Pecan Weevil (Curculio caryae). In the same genus as more famous oak weevils, this species lays eggs in pecans and other hickory nuts. It is native to the southeast, but is a notable agricultural pest. #bugs #sciart #wildlife #alabama
