not buying Andi’s the Kennedy center year is one of my deepest regrets 😭

this is a job i could never in good conscience recommend to someone who didn't have a stable source of external income and health care; it's a job for rich people, people with rich partners, or people with very caring parents. that's pretty much it.

something people outside the industry might not understand is that journalism is shrinking at a staggering rate. every time there are cuts, there are fewer jobs, more jobseekers (a lot of them with Pulitzer-level awards), and more incentive than ever to seek stable employment outside journalism.

I like that @51st.news is being built from the ground up, and with support from individual readers. But that we are building something this way makes what Jeff Bezos did to the Post even more shameful. He has endless resources to sustain a great newspaper. He chose not to.
