While the Trump administration attempts to stall the country’s clean energy transition and prop up fossil fuels, Earthjustice’s clean energy progress in leading states like Maryland provides a blueprint for other states to follow.

These threats are very serious, but they are not new. The Twin Metals mine has been thwarted time and time again. ​

That’s because environmentalists and outdoor recreationists recognize the importance of permanently protecting the Boundary Waters from mining pollution.

​If built, the Twin Metals mine would mean the permanent destruction of habitat for hundreds of species. As climate change shrinks our planet’s biodiversity, we can’t afford to lose the Boundary Waters – or the thousands of jobs it sustains for the region’s outdoor tourism economy.

The Trump administration wants to mine at the doorstep of the Boundary Waters. With a vast network of over 1,000 lakes, a dark sky sanctuary, and over 230 miles of overnight hiking trails, it’s no wonder that it is the single most visited Wilderness Area in the U.S.

Earthjustice attorney Mandy DeRoche says there is less transparency due to confidentiality agreements and rushed approvals. “You can’t follow the facts, you can’t follow the benefits or the negative impacts that could come to the service area or to the community.”

Meta is building a $10B data center in rural Louisiana that will use more daily power than New Orleans in peak summer, to be powered by 3 new gas plants. It's unclear how much Meta will pay toward gas plants, raising concerns that residents could bear the cost through higher utility bills.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is facing an urgent threat: a copper‑nickel mine proposed on its doorstep. Pollution from the site could be carried downstream and spread through the region's lakes and into Canada — and once damage is done, it may be irreversible.​

The Trump Administration says that mining in the Boundary Waters watershed will help the US achieve “Energy Dominance,” but Twin Metals is a Chilean-owned mine that would ship its product abroad to be processed and sold offshore.
