Our comments on @cityofoakland.bsky.social's "Oakland for All" vision plan.

Oakland needs a concrete plan, and responsible team, for delivering improvements to avoid repeating its past failures to develop housing and infrastructure throughout the city eastbayforeveryone.org/2025/08/20/o...

Ultimately the crowd was a lot less hostile than they would have been in previous years because there's nothing they can do to stop the proposal

Unfassbar... in related news: In der Bay Area kam grad raus, dass dort die Wasserstoffflotte je nach Modell nur zu 43% oder 64% der Zeit einsatzbereit war. Wäre spannend mal Zahlen der SASA zu kriegen.

In 2024, AC Transit's hydrogen bus fleet achieved an availability rate of 43% (for the 2018 variety) and 64% (for the 2022 variety). Essentially you need twice as many hydrogen buses as service you want to run actransit.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=...

Front and rear car each make half the stops

You can replace a diesel engine for $35,000 and then run the bus for six more years, about eleven years of revenue service for twelve years of useful life by AC Transit's estimates.

These hydrogen buses cost $1.6 million each and you get three years of useful service out of them.

A six year old bus is “near EOL”? At 43% reliability this means you are procuring a total of 2.5 years of revenue service when you buy a bus.

Why should transit agencies pursue this
eastbayforeveryone.bsky.social
This is in part due to state and federal rule making that treats hydrogen as "zero emission" despite the fact that most hydrogen is made from natural gas (which is partly why Chevron is supporting hydrogen so much)

Railfans know it as "across the street from the Key System HQ". Others call it the "that WeWork with the Highwire".

Save the date: our next monthly meeting is in-person on Wednesday, October 8 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. We are gathering in downtown Oakland at 1111 Broadway, 2nd floor.

We'll also be broadcasting on Zoom.

Sort of odd to frame lower home prices in Oakland - a city with more renters than homeowners - as an automatically bad thing.

This story also ignores how the boom in apartment construction in downtown Oakland might be impacting sale prices, and/or whether there are composition effects

Our statement on the horrible traffic violence near Emerson Elementary
Walk Bike Berkeley is deeply upset that a motorist severely injured several people walking and biking and traumatized many more near Emerson Elementary School on September 16th.

This horrible incidence of intentional traffic violence underscores that cars are dangerous death machines, particularly when operated by intoxicated and careless or aggressive people on streets that encourage high speeds.

We hope the victims of these collisions heal quickly and that the City of Berkeley redoubles its efforts to protect the safety of people walking and biking.

AB 645, which allows Oakland to install speed cameras and fine speeding drivers, was signed by the Governor in October 2023.

It took until June 2025 for enabling legislation to pass the Oakland City Council. Speed cameras still not installed yet.

This year a developer is proposing to waive both of these standards - along with nine other development standards - because they make housing infeasible to build in Walnut Creek. This single project would double last year's housing output in the city. walnutcreek.granicus.com/GeneratedAge...

Last year we sent a letter to Walnut Creek encouraging them to modify their Objective Design Standards to remove a "multiple materials" requirement for building façades and also to reduce required driveway widths, which are wider than the fire code.
