Musings about baseball, usually about the Braves, but also about other guys I find interesting.
Absolutely great that he’s back to add some solidity to the bullpen.

Obviously had good luck going his way during his Braves stint, but his slider’s good at avoiding too much contact in the zone despite how much he’s relied on it. As long as he relies on that, he should be fine overall.

Command is completely shot, but fastball/sweeper combo was solid at getting whiffs in AAA, and changeup had encouraging signs in 2023 with its underlying attack direction. Definitely worth a shot.

Brujan’s DFA highlights how the final bench spot probably needs better candidates, though.

No reason he shouldn’t be claimed and given a chance in Spring Training. Yes, his command has been bad, but his fastball/slider combo has been excellent at getting whiffs in the zone, especially the former pitch.

Would love to see the Braves take a flier on him.

Obviously Strahm is the big name here, but definitely watch what the Phillies do with Bowlan and his fastball/slider combo. Wouldn’t be surprised with a Ronny Henriquez-type breakout with him if they tweak his pitch usage to lean more on his whiff ability.

Not only great to bring him back, but also goes a long way to solidify the depth by shifting Dubon to a utility role.

Definitely gives them one of the better benches they’ve had in a long while between this move, Dubon, and the DH/OF rotation with Yaz’s signing.

Carlos Hernandez would be an interesting minors project for a team with good pitching dev given an offseason and Spring Training to work with him.

Results haven’t always been consistent, but there’s a LOT of interesting parts to his profile to work with.

Makes a ton of sense, all jokes aside about them claiming *EVERYONE*. Was fine as a decent reliever as recently as last year, and his slider has improved in terms of both spin and whiff ability.

Plus, arb increase shouldn’t really be that much anyway, so shouldn’t be expensive if they like him.

Well, we got to learn what could top that: the Dodgers’ meltdown last night.
Kyle Freeland going ham on them when he wasn’t even scheduled to pitch in the series until his ejection … now *that’s* funny.
It would be incredibly funny if the Rockies swept the Padres this weekend.

Another, underrated benefit of this: further improvements to the bench by extension. Allen’s admittedly a defense only one, but between him and Fraley, the Braves at least look stronger in an area that’s consistently been a sore spot in recent years.

Not exactly risk-free, but worst case if he doesn’t bounce back it’s a one-year deal at a position where the alternatives are not exactly great. Smart move to scoop him up even if it’s hardly an insignificant amount owed to him.
