I am fond of saying that a somewhat adequate outcome is still "better than a slap in the face with a wet fish."

In this case, though, the slap in the face with the wet fish is better than what happens to her in the next panel.
A young woman has had a fish thrown at her face. It's colliding with her with a splash, as she recoils. The woman is wearing vaguely medieval-peasant costume, which matches the stonework bridge and half-timbered houses we can see behind her.

I was rereading "The Hard Way," one of my top three Quitclaim stories, and just teasing Stef about profanity, and this panel is the intersection of that. (OMG this is gonna be such hell to alt-text ...)

For most of the story it is acceptable if we can't always make out Mr. Obsidian's outlines clearly (image below), but at the end he undergoes a shape change and the reader needs to be able to tell it happened. [Shape change not shown because it's a spoiler.]
Mr. Obsidian, standing on a city street in a haze of vapor, shouting something defiant. He has black skin with white bodypaint; the white paint areas are the only parts of him that have clearly visible shape/outlines. He has a shock of stiff ice-blue hair. He is thin and tall.

(Don't come in here telling me it's not a Caterpillar P-5000, I'm aware, do you think you're dealing with a novice? For one thing, it's much bigger. I'm not sure how she gets INTO it -- a human can stand between its legs almost without bumping their head.)

No, this is not Malcolm Gladwell.
A tall, very thin man with sunken cheeks and dark circles around his eyes like he hasn't been getting enough sleep. He is studying you with his eyes narrowed, with a hand to his chin. He has white eyelashes, gray-white eybrows, and a shock of gray-white hair that poofs out all around his head. His skin is pale and has an odd bluish undertone. He is wearing a dilute blue-gray shirt, but his tie is a very bright blue-and-white pattern.

OK IAIN I DESIGNED THE GUYS ARE YOU HAPPY NOW
Two unusual-looking men, seen from the waist up. The one in front is stocky and has glossy turquoise skin. He wears yellow and orange bodypaint designs over that, and nothing else. His hair - which is orange with turquoise roots - has an enormous vertical tuft in front which looks almost like a flame. It also has two braids, which dangle over his shoulders. The man in back is thin and nearly a head taller than the one in front. He has black skin - and I mean obsidian black, and also glossy - and is wearing only white bodypaint on his shoulders, arms and eyes trimmed in ice blue. His hair is short and stands upright spikily, and is also ice blue and appears to be fairly glossy/reflectve, we see white highlights in it. Neither of them looks particularly friendly.

OK, well, I didn't expect to spend that much time on ONE character design, but it was important to get right.

What we can see of it in this waist-up image is a long dangling cap with antlers, and a blouse/top with an open neck and a large fur ruff over the shoulders and well down the front, completely covering the breasts. She is wearing unusual makeup, including white speckles on her cheeks and forehead, white eyeliner, and the underside of her nose is darkened. The woman from the first image. She's not wearing any clothes (at least not from the waist up, which is all we can see). Her hands are covering her breasts. She has black nail polish. She has ears shaped like a deer's or some similar animal. Her black curly hair is shaved all around the sides and back of her head, so it's only on top. She is wearing a green plastic headband with small antlers. She is looking directly at the camera unabashedly.

I really like Exine. She is one of the most interesting character designs I've done in a long time, and she renders beautifully.

However, she is not a good person.

Wendy hates having to go into the weapons locker so if she's got a gun that means she has absolutely run out of patience and/or the story is approaching its final act.

I have been working on the part of the story which will henceforth be known as "the part with a lot of robot penis."

I can safely post this image because Wendy's gun is concealing the article in question, but note that Exine has a custom-decorated frame, and her choice of appliance matches that.
Wendy Barlowe, mostly off-camera and with her back to it, is pointing a gun at Exine Tryler, an L-frame robot with a custom design. L's have hotswap genitals, and Exine is currently wearing a large penis whose colors match her chassis. Wendy's gun is concealing it from the camera.

In panel 1 we see Cusi. Cusi is a deaged version of her mom, in panel 2. I picked that figure as her mom BECAUSE I knew from experience she'd deage fairly well. Many figures do not. And I still have to be very careful how I show Cusi because she can look OK (3) or very wrong (4). More in alt text.
Cusi Setrick in her first close-up panel in the previous Coldpoint story. She's just arrived at Coldpoint. Her hair is extremely short (they have to shave it for the voyage) and she's wearing a spare coldsuit liner because they don't have other clothes that fit her yet. She actually looks reasonably like the eight-ish years old she's supposed to be here. Cusi's mother Hara. This is the exact same base figure as Cusi, just not de-aged. Actually, she's been aged UP a little; I added a few face wrinkles. She is wearing a jumpsuit and, like Cusi, her hair is growing back in and is extremely short. Cusi walking with Wendy Barlowe in the current Coldpoint story. Her hair's grown out a bit (it's about three months between stories). The height difference between her and Wendy, and their posture, plus the fact that her face isn't well-lit, covers a lot of sins and she comes off looking reasonably like an actual child in this shot. A later panel with Cusi from this same story. She does not have breasts! It's a combination of the way the sweater hangs and her leaning forward. Unfortunately she looks like a miniaturized adult here, possibly with a slightly oversized head. But there is no way around it; I'm not even bothering to redo this panel because I know that in this lighting other attempts would be just as doomed. This is one of many reasons there aren't a lot of children in my stories.

A party or other formal gathering in a drawing room with a fireplace at the rear. The women are in dresses, the men in black tie. We are at a very high camera angle, up by the ceiling, looking down at the tops of everyone's heads. The butler, who is carrying a tray, is looking up at us saying "Rice Krispies square, sir?" In the large mirror over the fireplace we see that he is speaking to a large ghostly skeletal apparition, either floating above everyone's heads or very tall, and furthermore it becomes clear that the drawing is from the apparition's point of view. The art style is reminiscent of Ronald Searle.

Byla is my favorite character to render in the Coldpoint stories because somehow she always comes out looking striking and good no matter how you light her, and doesn't have the surface issues of some of the other robots. (They often come out too shiny, no matter what I do.)
