Trump: "We took the freedom of speech away because that's been through the courts and the courts said you have freedom of speech, but what has happened is when they burn a flag it agitates and irritates crowds."

“Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?”

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

In the Orlando airport with some time to kill. I always forget how big this place is — and also, that this is the first real travel experience for quite a lot of people. Kids, but adults too, making Disney their first real trip. First monorail. Maybe even first escalators.

Has anyone asked PenFed, Navy Federal, or USAA about this?

A new White House memo says that furloughed federal workers aren't entitled to back pay.

This is clearly against the law, which guarantees furloughed federal employees back pay for the duration of a government shutdown.

They did, in fact. And Johnson was in Congress at the time. Apparently dementia is contagious.

Didn’t they pass a law to clarify this in 2019?

Johnson: "It's true that in previous shutdowns, many or most furloughed employees have been paid for the time they were furloughed, but there is new legal analysis - I don't know the details, I just saw a headline - but there are some legal analysts saying that might not be appropriate or necessary"

Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

As a Gen X elder, I feel so screwed by technology: I know enough to have to explain it to people in my parents' generation, but need to ask Gen Z for help with anything new.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

This! My nephew told me last week that he'd deleted social media from his phone. "It was turning into a hobby," he said. "I didn't want it to be my hobby."

one stops seeing the successful technological development as a choice. cars, freeways. planes. digital -- and analog! -- photography. digital recording. recording at all. once they have come to be, and gained success, we begin to think of participation in them not as a choice, but as normal behavior

I'm supposed to go on vacation tomorrow. It is so contrary to my nature that I was paralyzed with anxiety earlier tonight, until I called my sister (who is coming on vacation with me) and she told me to cut it out.

Metro just offloaded an entire Blue line train at Arlington Cemetery. The conductor said the train would be going back to Largo. Metro is single-tracking now between Pentagon City and National Airport. Anyone know why?
