🚨New publication alert!

We just published a brief on what happens to parenting students' chances of success in college when they are threatened with eviction. The results are devastating. I have never cried when writing up research before. I did this time.

Ousted from Opportunity: Eviction's Adverse Impact on Parenting College Students
New America partnered with the Eviction Lab to understand how eviction affects parents who are attending college while caring for children—and found it likely leads to severe negative consequences.

Seems bad, maybe Dems could message on this or something.

CNN: “An older couple making $85K/year will see their yearly insurance premiums jump from $7K to $25,000 — 30% of their income.” 😳#TrumpShutdown #TrumpHealthCareTax

This is what Dems are drawing attention to and want fixed. Now, not later.

Notoriously, speeches that include the line, “F.A.F.O” followed by a marked, and unneeded pause for applause, are considered excellent

Despite appearances, this is not a @nytpitchbot.bsky.social joke, it's an actual @nytimes.com column by some Claremont hack who praises Hegseth for his "nuanced vision of the military’s purpose and its relationship to civilian society."

We just got a $50 a month increase this year.

Really sick of having to pay through the nose for the power needs of multi billion dollar companies.

“By 2028, an average family in the region will be paying around $70 a month extra on their electricity bills because of forecasted data center growth”

I'm once again asking why ratepayers are subsidizing AI titans?

93% of unhoused people say they’d move inside if safe, affordable housing were available.

In this edition of The Thread, Helen Bonnyman shows why permanent supportive housing is the real solution.

Cover of a publication titled 'Trump's Occupation of DC Proven Housing Solutions' by Helen Bonnyman, featuring a nighttime scene with three individuals standing outside a building. A graphic with a deep green background featuring the quote, "At every turn, our leaders are focusing on the wrong part of the issue and ignoring the facts." The top left corner is marked with the words "THE THREAD."

Hopefully the 9 institutions “invited”
To sign the administration’s ludicrous Compact For Higher Education, take a look at New College as an object lesson in what would likely happen if they agreed to that abomination.
donmoyn.bsky.social
Yes, New College is incredibly inefficient but it also dropped 60(!) spots on the US News & World Report rankings. Not easy!
Everytime Chris Rufo is introduced as an impt voice in higher ed, remember that the one time he had a hand in running an institution has been a disaster.
Competence matters.

You'll be shocked to learn New College of Florida is on the brink of implosion just a couple of years after DeSantis engineered an extreme right-wing takeover

Fun fact: NCF's new overlords spend $134K per student (!!...the average at other FL publics is $10K) www.insidehighered.com/news/governa...

Sigh.

1. I know this, no need to point out the obvious.

2. I don’t really care if farmers voted for it or not. The reality is that when food prices go up/SNAP is cut, it screws over millions of low income families, and I’d like to avoid that. If it helps farmers who voted for Trump, so be it.
snidely1459.bsky.social
Farmers voted for this.
econroy.bsky.social
SNAP is also a jobs/subsidy program for American farmers, so reducing how much the feds buy and send to food banks hurts farms across the country.
donmoyn.bsky.social
Two parallels here: one is the cancelation of food aid for USAID which was provided by US farmers. The other is the broad attack on SNAP which already means more people will need food banks that Trump is also undermining. It is an assault on our he most vulnerable.

Our monthly electric bill just increased by $50 a month.

we are in northern VA, ground zero for new data centers.

AI is expensive. Even if you don't use it.

"Analysis of wholesale electricity prices across the country paints a picture of doubled wholesale prices ... It’s complex, but one thing is for certain: those within 50 miles of data centers are bearing the brunt of it."
AI Data Centers Are Skyrocketing Regular People's Energy Bills
AI data centers in the US are spiking nearby customers' electricity bills, and bringing other unexpected costs.

The Trump administration compact with higher education turns a manifesto of conservative grievances into policy, sprinkled with cost-cutting measures, and violates the very principles it claims to protect. I wrote about it here. It's free: adamhsays.substack.com/p/a-raw-new-...

The story of 2024 is this: Trump had a plan to destroy American government called Project 2025, which had, literally, not a typo, a 4% approval rating. He lied constantly and said he wouldn't do it.

Then he entered office and immediately implemented AN EVEN MORE EXTREME VERSION OF IT.

The Vice President of the United States used his social media page to tell Joy Reid, a private citizen with no connection to the government, that she should express "gratitude" for how this country has treated her.

Black women remain the most consistent targets in all of this.
