Delighted that my paper "Frederick George Jackson, Indigenous knowledge, and the 'heroic age' of polar exploration" has been published in the Polar Record. Better still, it's #OpenAccess #exploration #geography doi.org/10.1017/S003...

In such times,—and principally at a crisis like the present, whereon the fate of mankind in social intercourse seems to impend—in a situation extremely perilous,—it is difficult for a reflecting mind to forebear expressing its feelings, fears, & hopes. Thoroughly enjoyed editing my first long read for @uk.theconversation.com, a great piece of storytelling by @edarmstonsheret.bsky.social showcasing his research on the forgotten Black, Asian and working class labourers who made some of history’s most famous expeditions possible.

Earlier this month I visited the excellent "Sector 2: Nicosia" exhibition at the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and have reviewed it for the @jofhistgeog.bsky.social: doi.org/10.1016/j.jh... #Cyprus
Photograph showing the entrance to the "Sector 2: Nicosia" exhibition. Occupying most of the image is a grey concrete wall with "SECTOR 2 Λευκωσία_Νicosia" written on it. To the left and right of the image are white-painted doors.

I just came across this amazing sketch from 1909: It shows the US doctor, explorer & probable fraud Frederick Albert Cook talking about his supposed expedition to the North Pole, stating that his feat was only possible because he took "Oxygénée Cusenier" - a famous absinthe - with him! 🗃️🍸
This image shows a black drawing - on the yellowish page of a newspaper. A dark-haired, bearded man - Frederick Albert Cook - sits at a desk, papers in front of him, a map of the North Pole behind him. In front of him are rows of people, listening to him. They are mostly men, but at least two women can also be seen in the audience.

Below him is a caption, that says, in French: "... Having only dried fish and seal oil for food, my wonderful appetite overcame my disgust… Needless to say, I had equipped myself with a few cases of OXYGÉNÉE CUSENIER! It was thanks to this incomparable aperitif that I was able to reach the North Pole! (Enthusiastic cheers.)"

This sketch was published in "Le Sourire", on the 25.09.1909, p. 10.

Extremely proud to say they let me back on You're Dead To Me to talk about the Northwest Passage! #histSTM #Polar - tagging in all my #TerrorCamp friends for this one

screen shot of the promo image for BBC's You're Dead to Me ( a mock bayeux tapestry style image of a man in chain mail armour and an arrow in his eye pointing dismissively to a soldier who is shruggng) text reads "Arctic Exploration: the fatal quest for the Northwest Passage - Greg Jenner is joined by Dr Vanessa Heggie and comedian Stu Goldsmith to learn all about the perilous history of Arctic exploration"
