1999

A former mess hall in a derelict military base.

I was a new recruit.

Not in the military, but Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit.

We rehearsed on an old fort donated to us by the city.

This run down building was a dream come true.

I wanted to be a cartoonist!

As an introvert, I dreamed of crafting funny little stories with images in the wee hours of the morning all alone.

Have I been having an identity crisis?
Or am I just a dude with many facets?

So, I’ve spent several thousand dollars on online courses and coaching and a weird things has happened…

One of my favorite parts about being a Mosaic Youth Theatre alum is that no matter where I go …

Whenever I tell people I traveled the country as a game show host there’s always this …

… “Wait, you did what?”

Nepotism is normal for the success

Reputation > Resume
Great careers are built on great relationships

Your biggest problem isn’t lack of opportunity
Your biggest problem is obscurity

Auditions are for strangers
Roles are for the Relationships

Long after the fanfare John Fikany was still connecting with his audience from the annual Detroit Economic Club mentorship kickoff.

A young person at the event wanted to speak to John.

Unfortunately, the bus would not wait ...

So what did these two amazing guys do?

The actor is the literary athlete.

Performance is performance.

If you have to get in front of people and execute your expertise, learn from the best regardless of their "industry."

I appreciate the simplicity of the question.

The desire to focus.

The intention to find the one thing to pour all your energy into.

did i lead them astray with my answer?

You learned how to approach a role with honesty ... a long time ago.
You forgot how to do it.
Why? You didn't use it.

You didn't show up everyday.

If you don't use it ... you ______.

This your wake up call to finally hit the Gym!
October 19, 2025 at 4:01 PM
Where is the time to actually practice acting?
A bodybuilder who doesn't lift everyday is not a bodybuilder.

We get so caught in the busy-ness of having a career ...
... that we forget to actually strengthen our skills.

So go to the gym, and bring a friend. (Link in profile)

Actors roll out of bed thinking their BFA will save them at an audition
... it won't.

You get rusty.
No matter how good your training is.

This happens because life happens.

Jobs.
Spouses.
Children who apparently need to eat everyday.

So you stop working out. Go to the gym!

"Great advice" can grow stale.
"Great advice" from a source built on theory is even worse.

People who try to teach you something they've never done is inauthentic.

We lambast creator/educators as scam artists (and some are).

Want a place to work with real dedicated actors?

People in the performing arts industry will exploit your love for acting.
They will demand you work for free.

Why?

Low budgets ...

...& / or greed.

But, mainly because they know the "supply" of actors is high.

Where's the Better Business Bureau for actors?
October 15, 2025 at 12:12 PM
I wanted a place to hear my scripts and work with great actors.
That place just didn't exist ...
... until now.
October 14, 2025 at 8:57 PM
Want to hear your scripts read aloud by dedicated actors?

Consider joining The Verb Gym

Every week 🤞 we will be reading a new play out loud for the express purpose of practicing and getting better!

We created a space where creative types could workout their craft muscles.

I'm looking for real actors ...
... who might be a little out of shape.

No, I'm not a personal trainer offering bio-hacks.
I'm an actor like you looking for a place to workout ...

... my acting skills!

My mentor, and a 20+ year veteran in the nonprofit space, shared with me:

"Modesty isn't noble… it's expensive."

I'm NOT proposing becoming narcissistic entities screaming "look at my greatness!"

Quite to the contrary ...

Rather, we must become helpful guides through the valleys of life.
October 2, 2025 at 3:58 PM
En masse, people crave fast outcomes, low effort, and clear value.

We're in a "fast food for the mind" world.

Nonprofits have fallen behind in demonstrating the incredible transformations we DO nurture.

Think about it:

What outcome are we really selling?
Is it just relief, or is it empowerment?
October 2, 2025 at 3:58 PM
Nonprofits apparently are not very good at sales.
We’re amazing at the doing, but often terrible at the selling.
And I don't mean selling for profit. I mean selling the outcome.
With all the ... changes ... it's clear people don't actually know what we do.
