The Iceman Cometh
Masterful crime writer Bruce Robert Coffin is back on the beat where he belongs, with lights flashing and sirens wailing to mark the twisted track of tarnished Maine state trooper detective Brock Justice in Crimson Thaw, the debut novel in a new series of detective mysteries. Coffin, drawing on his long career as a cop's cop in Portland, is a past master at portraying the dogged pursuit of homicide detectives on the trail of a killer, crafting realistic tales of long hours, uncooperative dirtbags and bosses as well as partners who may not like each other, punctuated by occasional bursts of gunfire, betrayal, lust and mayhem.

People ask me all this time -- well, not all the time, but often enough to cause me to wince: Is Ed Earl Burch you? Or, are you Ed Earl Burch? I suppose it's my own damn fault because when I conjured him up more than a few decades ago, I gave him some of my physical features -- he's bald, bearded, has bad knees and wears specs -- and a lot of my character flaws and endearing quirks and qualities.

Are you dreading the holiday gift-buying sprint dead ahead because you're slap out of fresh notions about what to buy Cuzin' Clyde, Aunt Maybelle, Brother Charlie, Sister Wanda Sue and She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed? Does the notion of braving the Black Friday hordes cause you to break out in night sweats in broad daylight? Do you flinch and shake like a heroin addict every time you see a Christmas come-on from Best Buy, Macy's, WalMart or Kay's Jewelers?

Raymond Chandler’s Ghost
I’m a Chandler junkie. As in Raymond Chandler. Always have been, always will be. One of the founding fathers of the hard-boiled school of crime fiction, Chandler’s at the head of a semi-long list of writers who taught me a lot about the trade before I ever tried my hand at it. Most of them are dead. Which means they won’t be calling me out for hanging their names on what I’m about to say about character and dialogue.

28-year-old Pedro Luis Salazar-Cuervo, who has no known criminal record, was accused by Texas police of being in a Venezuelan gang because they found a photo of him posing with another man with tattoos, his lawyers say.

From ProPublica partner @texastribune.org:
Migrant deported to El Salvador after DPS labeled him a member of Tren de Aragua without evidence, lawyer says
Lawyers for Pedro Luis Salazar-Cuervo deny he is a gang member and say the DPS accusation hinges on a photo they found of him standing next to a man with tattoos.

See, most of the time when people say something is Orwellian, they are full of it. This, on the other hand, is actually Orwellian.
I feel like every day, I'm seeing more and more examples of this in real time.

ICE was at Dodgers Stadium. This is a fact that has been documented by protestors and the national news.

Except ICE is now denying it on X and saying it wasn't them. It's government gaslighting in real time.
