It was perceived as an anti-war picture in many circles when it came out and shrewdly subversive. It isn't, of course. Which is fine! The unimaginative studio-era lighting certainly dates it unpleasantly, but it's a good movie portraying GP's career as a series of frustrating cycles of self-defeat.

Even Jim Varney saved himself with voice over work in his final years, and Steven Seagal managed a supporting role in a decent production once. There is hope for all!

This aspect intrigues me, but the experience of "The Hurt Locker" taught me that the aesthetics of Bigelow and her DP Ackroyd are too nauseating for a big-screen experience. The presence of the word "shakycam" in reviews invariably torpedoes my interest in anything.

...the result would almost certainly benefit Republicans, and not just marginally. That’s the natural geography of the South: Democrats have inefficiently dispersed vote clusters in dense minority regions, Republicans dominate the rest.
