I had an old post on Twitter about this. The US spends about 18% of its GDP on the social safety net and 3.5% on military. Germany spends about 24-25% of its GDP on the social safety net and 2% on the military.

Our military spending is not why they can have nice things or why we don't.

This is classic Atlantic writing: vivid, anxiety-forward, elite-sourced, and deliberately alarming. Designed to provoke seriousness, without interest in probability.
NEW: Is Greenland next?

After Trump’s strike on Venezuela, some Europeans think he may now act upon his desire for Greenland

And that, which could spell the end of NATO, might happen without any military force - and perhaps with just a Truth Social post www.theatlantic.com/national-sec...
Is Greenland Next?
After Venezuela, Europeans think Trump may actually be serious.

It's offensively hinky that Gwyneth Paltrow is being promoted for Best Supporting Actress in "Marty Supreme" while A24 pretends that Odessa A’zion isn't in it and doesn't exist. She and the movie's fans should be righteously outraged.

Speaking ill of the dead is controversial, particularly when it was a violent death. It’s edgy; it’s sensitive; best avoided in most cases, etc.

Baselessly making another person’s murder *about yourself,* and then approving of it, is a different thing. That is delusional, narcissistic, sociopathic.

Trump pardoned the ex-president of Honduras who shoveled hundreds of tons of cocaine into the U.S. He pardoned the founder of a black market who imported fentanyl from China.

These men poisoned America & killed millions. Whatever Trump’s illegal boat strikes are about, it sure isn’t drugs.
Trump move to pardon Honduras’s ex-president shows counter-drug effort is ‘based on lies and hypocrisy’
Why has Trump blown up alleged narco boats in the Caribbean and at the same time decided to let a big-time trafficker off the hook?

Year-end critics’ lists exist for people to fight over, so I’m happy when people complain about them. But the complaint I will never get is, “I’ve never heard of most of these movies/albums/shows.” Yes, and? Why be mad about learning about stuff you didn’t know before from the news?

ACAB and Defund The Police -- the two most destructive messaging efforts from sloganeers who don't actually want to fix a fucking thing and will, at every opportunity, alienate the entire electorate from actual police reform for the sheer pleasure of their own self-regarding purities.

Eat a dick.
Okay but ACAB includes David Simon.
Hard, fast rule from a veteran police reporter: Excepting anyone engaged in infiltrating a criminal conspiracy in an undercover capacity, any law officer who hides his identity from the public is a shitheel is doing vile shit and is, in fact, actively destroying the credibility of law enforcement.

I legitimately think one of the absolute poisons of American political discourse is how “but will this matter electorally” has become the only metric used by basically the entire non-partisan media for assessing a story’s importance

I am comfortable with the political label "pro-death". Supporting capital punishment is the component of this for which I am least enthused, but it is appropriate for uncommon violent offenders who cannot be rehabilitated, and it's a pity our legislators abolished this option.
‘No hope of rehabilitation’ for Quebecer who killed 10-year-old in 1994, judge says
A Quebec man who was convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of a 10-year-old girl north of Montreal in 1994 has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

An Ontario ad on Ronald Reagan’s support of free trade may have been an unnecessary risk. But Mark Carney’s apology to Donald Trump was an unnecessary own-goal.

"The Thin Red Line", "American Psycho", "Panic Room", "Phone Booth", "Girl, Interrupted" and I at least respect arguments in favor of "Fight Club" and "Requiem For A Dream". Nothing of consequence since then. Movie stars with 30+ credits but no "good or successful films" scarcely exist.
I will never understand how Jared Leto has remained a working movie star for 30 years despite never starring in a good or successful film
‘TRON: ARES’ is set to have a loss of $132.7M.

Yeah so this is breaking through. The 20b to Argentina and family farms are going under because they can't sell to their markets and the president closed USAID is not something that's just going to get shoved under the rug.
VARNEY: Some Iowa farmers are frustrated because Trump is putting $20b into Argentina to bail them out. They're worried that the administration is focused on foreign financial aid at the expense of American farmers.

Potential quandary for Canadians who will inevitably weigh in on this: if U.S. electoral maps, particularly in the South, were drawn by independent commissions using Canada-style principles (i.e. compactness, community integrity, and population equality, but not race or partisanship)...
my main takeaways from listening to the Supreme Court oral argument today are

-the writing is on the wall for the Voting Rights Act
-the Republican justices are now throwing racist spaghetti at that wall; they'll pass of whatever sticks as the opinion's rationale

The Republican justices already know where they’re going. They just have to figure out which route they’re going to take to get there.

Like it's title, "Orwell: 2+2=5" isn't very good at synthesizing information into something truthful or coherent. Orwell was not an "All Things Are The Fucking Same" thinker, but his most ardent disciples frequently are.

A good example of why direct inflation adjustment of this sort is more deceptive than clarifying when applied over very long stretches of time where consumption patterns are very different.

Basic foods (bread/grain) probably devours a third of Cratchet's income, but not the modern worker's.

Yes, I'm sure "anti-woke" was a coordinated entity with a unified purpose, executing a singular goal. That's exactly how inane time-wasting culture warriors operate. Likewise, the Punk Movement must have had a unified purpose to destroy musical harmony!

Yeah, SCOTUS has kind of made their bed here. There's no reason for the democrats to give up anything while SCOTUS allows impoundments and recissions.
Also: it makes zero sense to do a "deal" on any spending when Trump has already proven he will impound appropriated money at any time for any reason and SCOTUS has said repeatedly that him doing so is fine
In another era, a group of Republican Senators like Tillis, Cassidy, Collins and Murkowski would join with a handful of Democrats to iron out a deal to extend ACA subsidies and end the shutdown. But in a Trumpified GOP, there is little incentive to do that.
