Meet one of our newest group leaders, Dr Caroline Ovadia!
Caroline researches intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, a liver condition in pregnant people. She's worked with charities like ICP Support to make sure the research she is doing is what the patients want it to be!

intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. What is ICP and what can we do about it? ICP is the most common pregnancy-specific liver condition. It affects 0.7% of pregnancies in the UK (around 5,500 per year). British South Asian women have almost twice the incidence. ICP happens when the flow of bile from the liver becomes sluggish. Bile acids help us to digest food, but they are toxic in large amounts. As the flow of bile slows down, these bile acids build up and flow back into the bloodstream. They are not life-threatening for the mother-to-be, but research has shown that they cross the placenta and may affect the baby’s heart. What does this mean? ICP is associated with premature labour, fetal distress and, in severe cases, stillbirth. More recently, research has shown women who have had ICP may go on to develop liver disease.
