Walks of 2026 #1

sappy, extremely predictable but not unlikable time travel (low key, no falling in love with victorian explorers etc) thriller

first book of 2026 was about what would happen if a bloke could see 5 seconds into the future (i.e. a slightly less out there version of that old PKD book). initially fun extrapolation of the concept gets a bit relentless, and it felt a bit PLEASE MAKE A FILM OF THIS at times.

final book of 2025, the author's adaptation of his only suitably festive Doctor Who audio, of which my memory is rather dim. sort of haunted house tale with lots of neat ideas almost casually tossed aside with each twist, good stuff!

An interesting take on a ghost story that got slightly less interesting as it unspooled. A bit like Gone Home with more literal ghosts and fewer pointless interactive cardboard boxes.

Engagingly written vaguely Wicker Man-ish folk horror. Perhaps a touch too "does what it says on the tin" at times but has some enjoyable swings.

My wife's watching some programme about chefs getting Michelin stars and I wasn't very interested until it turned out when you get awarded one the actual Michelin man turns up

Didn't hate this, and read it in a single sitting, but came away slightly underwhelmed? Given the gimmick, seems a bit silly to complain it's more of the same, but am intrigued to see how she spins this out for 4 more volumes?

Lots of big, fun, SF ideas in this, but possibly too many as I sort of lost track of what it was supposed to be about by the end - wish it had done more with less!

Slightly unwieldy premise (the entire population of Earth disappeared at the moment the first mission to Mars landed and a thousand years later the 'Martians' are using time travel to figure out what happened), but it being unafraid to pile mad idea upon mad idea is the appeal really.

have liked lots of Baczkiewicz's radio 4 stuff but struggled with this - okay if not v original premise, picked up in the last couple of episodes but felt like a 90 minuter where the first 30 minutes had been dragged out over 2.5 hours. made me less forgiving of, charitably, variable performances.
