Another great piece by Jeremy Young. For higher education leaders looking for ways to defend higher education, consider joining Education for All. Our membership consists of leaders across the country seeking to resist the Anti-DEI legislation movement.

Higher education needs to reform itself. It also needs to defend itself.
The higher education sector must meet this coordinated attack with a coordinated response.

For those who think Anti-DEI is going away, #highered will see more of it.

"And while the broadsides against DEI have percolated in state legislatures, they have also become favored talking points for some conservative governors in an election year"

Don't let the means distract us from what the ends are. Rufo states exactly what the goal is, long-term: “Today, we celebrate victory. Tomorrow, we get back to the fight. We must not stop until we have abolished DEI ideology from every institution in America.” As usual, Emma Pettit does a great job.

“They’re trying to purge academia of people who don’t agree with their radical world view..." The argument that attacks on DEI lead to professionals leaving states is not a strong one--it is the goal of those attacking DEI.

Such a great piece showing how restricting stories equates to active marginalization and repression. Beautifully written, with direct narrative showing the threat to freedom that the anti-DEI, anti-CRT, book-banning, curriculum gagging movement is.

When Your Own Book Gets Caught Up in the Censorship Wars
I had envisioned book bans as modern morality plays—but the reality was far more complicated.

Anti-DEI legislation runs directly in alignment with more diversity in higher education.

This will happen more and more. The goals if the movement are to impose a national imaginary that marginalizes the already-marginalized.

“The Principles of Sociology class, which still would be available, would no longer count toward fulfilling required social science coursework. [It] involves lessons on gender, sex and sexuality and race and ethnicity, according to a syllabus from one university.”

If only we had the urgency to educate all students that we do to get just a few into elite colleges. "The majority of [minoritized] students enroll at community colleges or less selective [4]-year, which never considered race in the first place."

Please also let your higher ed administrators know of Education for All and concrete approaches to take to avoid such self-censorship.
adapalmer.bsky.social
Agreed. Most censorship programs don’t aim mainly to destroy or limit existing material, but to cultivate self-censorship by projecting fear and power.
bogiperson.bsky.social
As someone who studied censorship regimes academically - one of my big takeaways was that these regimes rely to a considerable degree on SELF-censorship even when they have explicit processes for censorship.

Please be aware & adjust your behavior accordingly.

Under Siege: Attacks on DEI and its Implications for Students

Exactly. The notion that DEI is a political construct is a distraction. The issue is power and attempting to maintain it by marginalizing the already marginalized. Restricting resources, curriculum, and offices is restricting access to higher ed and the promised that come with it.
donmoyn.bsky.social
One reason for this approach is to pit university employees against each other, by making DEI the reason why people are not getting pay raises.

Republican policymakers in Wisconsin have a new strategy for attacking DEI initiatives and public higher ed: refuse to fund any pay raises for 35,000 university employees until universities cut DEI programs/staff and the budgets used to support them. 1/
