🎉 This paper has been a long time and a labour of love (and hardship) for multiple group members, but, finally: we MPRA'ed 25k introgressed variants (Denisovan and Neanderthal) segregating at allele frequencies > 0.15 in humans today to evaluate their potential to regulate gene expression.

Did you not get the all-butter??? You must always get the all-butter, accept no substitutes!

I read this morning that he applied to Oxford to do classics, and they said, you can come but mustn't do classics so his parents paid for him to catch up for a year before he actually started his studies. I couldn't help but feel a bit 🤔, and, like, I'm a pretty spoiled child of privilege as it is.

Hm, are you sure that's shortbread? In my experience it should break and crumble a bit, definitely not bounce. That sounds more like one of those terrible chewy choc chip cookies...

Move to Australia they said, marsupials are cute and fluffy they said.

They're just referencing their stock prices?

You get one more day to make your voice heard on this, guys! It's a great "National Health and Medical Council" strategy, but there's basically no "Research" in it.

Dear Everyone, I've read the #NHMRC draft strategy and I have notes ...

So I'm going to...🧵🤔🧵😱🧵😵‍💫🧵🙏🧵🧵🧵
This is a repost from X because you all need to know!

It's a terrible document. There's no awareness of the value of discovery research and no interest in learning about it, just benchmarks and targets and impact. It's intellectually *so* lazy.
ee-reh-neh.bsky.social
Yeah that sounds ideal tbh... I miss radiators and hydronic floors, but Australia is decades behind - we're only just starting to discover double glazing.
ee-reh-neh.bsky.social
With a split system, you feel like it needs to be on the whole time - I've had a few now, and loved none of them.

... thinking about it now, though, this might all just be down to terrible Australian building standards and insulation.

Honestly, my big problem with heat pumps is that their heat feels flimsy and short-lived. Although I grant that this is perhaps because in Australia they're all reverse-cycle aircons. Radiant heat just *feels* warmer, especially since they keep radiating for a while after you turn them off.

This single author paper has to be seen to be believed.... My 'GIF' does it no justice

This one, in particular, which so far has proven pretty well suited to the slack replacement experience: zen-browser.app

I've got a bunch of slacks set up in a workspace and the keyboard shortcuts aren't broken so I'm happy enough!
Zen Browser
Beautifully designed, privacy-focused, and packed with features.

I just installed a separate browser that's ONLY for slack so it's basically like running the slack app

Yeah, the consequences of the leak fall disproportionately on the individual rather than the company responsible, which bend is. Phone company leaks your details, someone takes out credit in your name and it's now your fault, and your problem to deal with!
ee-reh-neh.bsky.social
Yeah I have no smart home devices and don't see the need for them but I also think that we're not the target, it's the big companies with poor cyber security having data leaks left and right and seeing no real consequence for it!
ee-reh-neh.bsky.social
It doesn't. I expect the number of truly damaging cyber attacks and data leaks to keep increasing significantly. Increased connectivity and uncritical digitisation of all systems is going to backfire.

And I want to really thank our invited speakers, who've graciously agreed to give up flight support so that we can use that money to fund additional travel awards. Thank you all for your generosity!

I'm stoked to be organising next year's MSS right here in beautiful Melbourne! We know Australia is very far away, and we're working hard to make sure we can support as many ECRs to attend as possible, so please do register and apply for a travel award!

Jane Goodall has died at the age of 91.

In 2020, Goodall spoke with Science Editor-in-Chief H. Holden Thorp for a #ScienceEditorial reflecting on the 60th anniversary of her arrival in Gombe to study wild chimpanzees. Read more: https://scim.ag/472Chb8

Sad news: Jane Goodall has died. She did more than any other human for our understanding and appreciation of our closest relatives, the chimpanzees.

That chimpanzees are Endangered tells you everything about our species and about what made her so exceptional.

Stay firm in your belief that your paper is perfect. I'll be over here nursing my belief that your statistics are fundametally flawed, and it's all good, we can agree to disagree! Stop wasting my time with 40 page responses to reviewers that don't actually address my main points. I support you!
