Just embarrassing the guy rather than causing injury would be more effective. Causing injury would justify whatever harsh reaction would follow. (In any case, the Secret Service wouldn't laugh it off.)

Although seeing all the MAGAphiles smacking themselves with cleats afterward could be amusing.

Journalists should wear cheaper shoes they wouldn't mind losing. Like wear the old ones with the hole or something when you go to the WH.

From the other angle, it's weird when you have friends who know famous people (or relatively famous) and you find out & think, Oh God, did I ever say anything stupid? Good rule I think is only talking about people like they might turn out to be in the room. (In some cases that changes nothing.)

I'm a little surprised I never smelled anything, though. They do dry out fast. The one in my kitchen wasn't there when I went out one afternoon and was there when I came back that afternoon, all dead & desiccated. The alive ones are decidedly cuter.
