@paco Not many of us can remember back when Ballcock Shank was playing shortstop for the Brooklyn Dodgers, but those who do can't forget Joe di Maggio's line drive off his nut bag.

That is a very valuable piece of baseball memorabilia you have there.

Red-shafted Northern Flickers playing with electricity. #birdcallout

I haven't done anything with the DSLR since moving here in June. Luckily, these two were at it long enough for me to find my camera bag, find the less-ancient of the two cameras, put the […]

Got an email from #hulu today. We want you back blah blah blah $2.99 a month blah blah blah.

They also dangled a Handmaid's Tale spinoff show as bait, which felt a little too on the nose.

Yeah, no thanks. Unsubscribe.

went out tonight to see some chamber music at a church in town

there's folks trying to get a teeny tiny classical scene going

which is amazing TBH, here in this little town on the edge of the continent

the ringleader is a music professor who's retired to the coast and is inviting friends to […]

Crow stopped by for peanuts again this morning. Trusted me enough this time to pick up the peanuts as I stood there watching.

you might need to see a lil guy in a box
a Siamese cat in a big cardboard box

@sarae Same basic effect as catnip but more powerful. I discovered it by accident: there was a valerian plant in the front yard at a place I lived, and my ex uprooted it, with the intention of planting something else there. I came out about an hour later to find several neighborhood cats in a […]

New from me:

There's a lot of misinformation around the reasons I was fired from WaPo.

Here's the official termination letter I got sent by Washington Post.

Read and judge for yourself.

I know this is a dangerous question to ask on fedi, but

if I were going to install a Linux distro on what's now my Windows laptop, because W11 sounds like trouble I don't need, what would you rec and why?

ty!

@ai6yr But, I mean, how much worse would that be than our current circumstance?
eedly.mindly.social.ap.brid.gy
@ai6yr I'll give it full marks for being waterproof, though. I checked on it an hour later and it was still happily illuminating the inside of the bucket. I was a little afraid a raccoon might fish it out and use it to conquer the world or something.

@ai6yr Two long-ish anecdotes.

1. MIPS: I bought an early-model MIPS hockey helmet following a fairly serious concussion. My first game back, my first faceoff, my opponent chose to ignore the puck and go right through me, as one sometimes does. As I fell backward and my mind's eye could see the […]

PSA for the day: DO NOT BUY (or let your kids buy) random branded bicycle helmets off Amazon. A lot of them ABSOLUTELY FAIL US safety standards. If you are going to buy a helmet nowadays, buy a MIPS helmet. #bicycles #helmets #bikes #BikeTooter

aha, the internal server error seems to have passed over

so here's an update for those of you wondering how our effort to socialize the feral is going

we trapped him on August 10 so this is not quite five weeks indoors, the first week of which was spent kenneled
three cats in a pile on a blanket that's over my legs

After several weeks, the crow stopped by again this morning, peering in at me as I made coffee. I'm not sure if they were appreciative or skeptical of my crow t-shirt, but they sat with me for a while, and ate the peanuts I offered.

A crow perches on a tall four-by-four post above a weathered fence against a clear sky. On the far side of the fence, the second story of a white house can be seen.

I was a digital artist on the periphery of the game industry (cough cough edutainment cough) in the waning years of the 20th century. I never worked on the coolest thing in the world, but if you were a kid in the late 90s/early 2000s and your parents sat you down in front of a drawing program […]

So I used to have a bicycle headlight that was pretty nice (usb charging, it also worked as a power bank for a phone), but it got misplaced about a year ago. I ordered a new one, and it just arrived, so I plugged it in to charge it, as one does.

Well.

The […]

It used to take over four hours for me to #donateblood: a 90-minute #motorcycle ride to Bloodworks in Eugene, a half-hour to do the thing, and a two-hour (or more) fun, restorative ride back home.

Now I live so close that it takes as much time to get my gear on as it takes to ride there. Today […]

I saw this yesterday, just as the clock was ticking over into "almost late for after-school pickup" territory. Two rufous hummingbirds ripping through the back yard, then landing about a foot apart on a power line. One hummingbird closes the gap to eight inches. The other hummingbird closes the […]
