as a girl with a PhD in natural language processing and machine learning it's actually offensive to me when you say "we don't know how LLMs work so they might be conscious"

I didn't spend 10 years in mines of academia to be told ignorance is morally equal knowledge.

We know exactly how LLMs work.

Saw someone say, “Stop hoarding books, we don’t need paper books anyway” and I can’t express how misguided this is. Online libraries disappear, digital books can be altered, and with Big Tech seeking to destroy history and literacy, print media has never been more essential.

(Actually in this case not only on people, because apparently the whole of existence - including the stars in the sky, usually not affected by the mere doings of humans - can be made to halt in the face of this terror.)
einarwh.bsky.social
Very good point. It’s a terror so breath-halting, so arresting, that the stars themselves freeze.
einarwh.bsky.social
It is a very interesting use of adjective, because it literally says that the terror is «åndeløs», but it is describing the effect of the terror on people. It is a transfer of the effect onto the cause. It probably has a fancy Latin name.
einarwh.bsky.social
I guess «åndeløs» is similar to «bated breath» in English?
einarwh.bsky.social
It’s used in the stock phrase «åndeløs spenning».
einarwh.bsky.social
Yeah, it’s hard to explain, but for me it’s an important difference between a terror that freezes you in place, halting your breath, and suffocation which (in my mind) takes place «in time». Time passes when you’re suffocating, but not when your breath is frozen still. If that makes sense.
einarwh.bsky.social
I would say it’s a terror that halts your breath. Like you’re frozen still. Suffocation has different connotations for me, like something external as opposed to internal.
