Europe has the power and the moral responsibility to lead by example as the world prepares for the next round of Global Plastics Treaty negotiations.

We believe in a world free of toxic plastic pollution. Our leaders must step up and deliver it now.
Reducing plastic pollution
Every piece of plastic that has ever been produced still exists in our environment today, with the majority of it ending up in our oceans. We are working…

Too often governments respond with policies that look green but ignore the root causes: overproduction of plastics, reliance on waste-to-energy incineration, and “bioplastics” that are neither truly biodegradable nor safe.

These false solutions divert resources from what is urgently needed.

Across the world, from Thailand to Ghana, waste workers, fishing communities, and families living near plastic and petrochemical plants are on the frontlines, breathing polluted air, drinking contaminated water, and suffering the real cost of our throwaway economy.

PFAS are linked to cancers, infertility and immune disorders. No one is safe – even Europe’s most senior leaders.

Yet while Europe’s politicians can, and must, demand tighter laws, the people most exposed to toxic plastics and harmful chemicals often have no such voice.

New research shows no one is immune to the plastic and chemical pollution crisis ❌

A shocking new study shows that every European minister tested had PFAS, toxic ‘forever chemicals,’ in their blood.

This investigation is another wake-up call to the dangers of plastics to human health.
EU ministers test positive for forever chemicals in their blood
PFAS were found in the blood of all the EU ministers sampled, the tests found.

📣 The numbers don't lie

G7 governments spent $1.2 TRILLION on military budget last year, while delivering just $348M to the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage – barely half of what they promised.

Governments in the Global North must #PayUp their climate debt and #FillTheFund now.

❌ Abolishing the Climate Change Act would drive up energy costs for everyone in the UK and mean disaster for people and the planet.

We cannot afford to move backwards. Leaders must prioritise supercharging the energy transition.

We've signed the letter calling on Kemi Badenoch to change course ⬇️

📢 This is a threat we won’t accept: abolishing the Climate Change Act (CCA) would harm our natural world, damage a thriving net zero economy, reverse significant progress, and be out of step with public and political opinion.

We’ve written an open letter to Badenoch to express our profound concern.
Climate Outreach are one of many major climate and nature organisations to express our grave and collective concern at Badenoch's threat to scrap the Climate Change Act.

Wetlands store more carbon per hectare than any other terrestrial ecosystem and are key to protecting us from extreme climate events.

Protecting the Pantanal is a non-negotiable if we want to solve the climate crisis and achieve justice for the communities that rely on them. 🌿🔥💧

We find that without secure access to landing sites and processing areas, fishing communities could be displaced, undermining their livelihoods & threatening national food supplies.

We call on the Liberian government and international partners to act swiftly to protect fishers’ rights.
"Protecting landing sites, restoring mangroves, and securing tenure rights are essential to support small-scale fisheries and bring security to the communities that depend on these resources."

Turtles are vital for maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems and fisheries. However, they are under threat of poaching, pollution, getting caught in discarded fishing nets, and more.

All season, our turtle patrollers will be working hard to protect nests, monitor the beaches and release hatchlings.

Turtles are leaving their winding, uneven tracks in the sand, as they cross the shore in search of a spot to lay their eggs.

⚖️ The Cameroonian government has taken some encouraging steps so far, including endorsing the Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency, but much more must be done to ensure that laws are enforced, perpetrators are held to account, and transparency becomes the norm.

🔍 On board these vessels, the situation is also dire.

Crew face gruelling and abusive conditions, with no contracts, inadequate food and water, and violence at the hands of foreign officers.
ejfoundation.org
❌ Under Cameroonian law, trawlers are banned from fishing within five nautical miles of the coast, where only artisanal fishing is permitted.

These laws are routinely flouted. By entering into this restricted zone, trawlers deplete fish populations and often destroy the artisanal fishers’ gear.

This treaty has been long overdue, and will protect marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

We applaud this important milestone for ocean governance and encourage the remaining countries to ratify the treaty. It’s time for tangible action:

🌊 A historic win for our ocean 👏

On Friday, the #HighSeasTreaty reached its 60th ratification needed to enter into force. This is an important moment for ocean protection and collective action on the global stage.

It covers the most remote parts of the ocean in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

We found that almost ⅔ of Chinese squid vessels were linked to deaths or physical assaults on board.
