A decade ago, Mark Carney, then-governor of the Bank of England, said, “It is governments who must choose whether, and how, to pursue that two-degree world."

Today, he is leading one of those governments — our government. Here's his climate track record so far: thenarwhal.ca/mark-carney-...

In the spring we heard about these “special economic zones” where, under Ontario’s Bill 5, provincial and municipal laws don’t apply, ostensively speeding up development. Now we have an idea of the rigorous regulatory test they face and it’s, um, the minister having a good feeling about them.

The Doug Ford government’s draft regulations for establishing “special economic zones” under Bill 5 rely heavily on the opinion of ministers, and dismiss First Nations’ calls for language affirming Indigenous Rights.

"While the history of residential schools is indelible for many survivors, collective memory is slippery ... a patient effort is underway to preserve something of that past — to ensure Canada doesn’t forget what happened in residential schools, and what it took to survive them."

My latest for @thenarwhal.ca: A massive nickel mine, and the community that wants to love it. Timmins, Ont., has a long history of mining and its economy could use another boom. But, who will protect the town from financial and environmental bust?

B.C. just approved one of its largest LNG projects yet.

Ksi Lisims LNG will ship 12M tonnes of gas a year overseas. Ministers say it will benefit the Nisg̱a’a Nation — but also admit it will worsen greenhouse gas emissions.
