Hi! I'm Emily. I'm a planetary geologist, a science writer, space artist, queer, ADHD, mom. I write & post about solar system & exoplanet science for Sky & Telescope and elsewhere, & post about space-themed art & jewelry I sell at elakdawalla.etsy.com. I live in Los Angeles. Also, cats.
Professional photo of me in a close-fitting jacket with stars and moons on it. I'm seated on a bench outdoors, leaning toward the viewer, one hand on my hip, other elbow on my raised thigh. I'm wearing one of my solar system necklaces and a pair of my "Earthrise" earrings. In my hand, a few bracelets made of brightly colored gemstones strung on wire; behind it, a worktop with more wire and open containers of beads. My two cats, Claude and Maurice, brothers, lying butt to butt on a gray carpet. Bigger Claude is dark gray and on his side; his tail curls over Maurice's hind legs. Mackerel-colored Maurice is on his chest, one paw curled, staring off to the right at something or other.

Raise your other hand if you have commented on works to encourage authors —

Wait, I lost track of the hands, can I get a volunteer to beta read my work to help me sort out where all the hands and other parts are going

Spite is such a powerful motivation!

In my previous career I used InSAR a lot. This mission has been a long time coming and it's very exciting to see it happen. This will be be a big deal in the InSAR world over the coming years. Even though I'm out of that game now, I look forward to seeing what it does.

Some good news from space, as the NASA-ISRO NISAR mission publishes its first synthetic aperture radar images of Earth. This spacecraft has a heckin' big antenna (a dish 12 meters across) for bouncing L- and S-band (25- and 10-cm) radio waves off the surface www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-is...
NASA-ISRO Satellite Sends First Radar Images of Earth’s Surface
Preliminary images from the most powerful Earth radar satellite ever launched offer a tantalizing glimpse of the science the mission will be able to deliver.

Well, Nixon got his name on the Moon landers, but everybody knows he had nothing to do with them.

trump gets credit for this

Okay, I don’t think this will keep me from wanting to turn off the TV whenever I see Kimmel, but I respect this

reminder: Jimmy Kimmel is enough of a mensch that he devised a segment on which actors who are just short of having enough work to qualify for union healthcare come on his show and deliver a single line of dialogue

I first read The Onion when I picked it up for free on street corners in Chicago in 1998, and I’m a proud subscriber to its reborn snail-mailed form
bencollins.bsky.social
By the way, you can in fact run a media business where people give you money for goods and services. 56k+ people give The Onion ~$100 and we give them a year of newspapers. This business didn’t exist last year in this way. People will pay for good shit. Now’s the time to break glass and go for it.

when they say you should never judge a book by it's cover they were talking about comic books because half that shit never actually happens in the book, they just messing with you

Ok, I’ll be the first to admit I haven’t given him a chance for a while.

The only segment I actually remember in detail from The Man Show was the one about Quarter-Ass Pants, which was indeed worth a chuckle, because it successfully brought attention to a stupid regulation.

Also, as much as I want to turn off the TV any time I see Kimmel on it, I do think Kimmel would agree with me that if I think he sucks I should just turn off the TV! It’s not hard to think somebody sucks and just move on with your life! I do it several times a day!
elakdawalla.bsky.social
(The weird thing is I liked Carolla on The Man Show as much as I hated the show, but Kimmel I just plain thought was a total waste of space. But! Clearly many others disagreed with me. I can say I hate Kimmel and watch something else or read a book! It’s a free country! At least I thought it was!)
elakdawalla.bsky.social
TBH I’ve always hated Kimmel, as far back as when my husband loved The Man Show, but I will go to war for a country in which one Dear Leader’s opinion about some talentless hack on TV to be unimportant

So, real question from a person who was never very good at history, is the current shitshow really any worse than the shitshow that prevailed when the original Bond movies were made, or was the public just more blissfully ignorant of the shitshow back then?

Within my family we literally call this my “burkini” and the fact that there are European countries that outlaw such a garment for anti-Islamist reasons is an affront to women’s health, nevermind women’s rights

Well, I’m 5’8” and distinctly pear shaped which means bathing suits have always been more “miss” than “hit.” I think with a full-length suit these variations kind of average out. My old one was a small; I’m different shaped now and based on site specs bought a large, and it fit.

I add some neoprene sand socks so rocky beaches don’t hurt me. I am sure I look incredibly uncool but my daughters are very good kids who don’t feel the need to pretend not to know this woman in her literally neck-to-toe swimwear, and I love them a lot for that.

Apparently selenite does energy stuff? So if she’s dubious say you have a big ol selenite energy thing

PSA. These swimsuits are the bomb. Every time I’ve worn mine I’ve had several women asking me where I got it because it’s awesome. Except in Hawai’i. Hawaiians roll their eyes. But here on the mainland where a lot of us have skin that sees sun only a couple times a year, people want this swimsuit.

May I recommend purchasing a head-to-toe bathing suit from tutublue.com. I have had one since 2017 when my husband bought it for me after seeing it on Shark Tank, and I only bought a new one this year. When I wear it I only need to sunscreen face, neck, and the backs of my hands.

It’s a really good article about why quartz colors happen though!

I buy stone spheres online to make solar system models and one of my favorite suppliers (because she has good taste in rocks and describe them accurately in Etsy listings) “anoints them with oil” and packs them in sage when shipping and I really wish she would not

You don’t need to identify anything. They check you head to toe annually — this is a “full skin check” — after which they may tell you to return in 3 or 6 months to see whether certain spots need a second treatment, otherwise they tell you to come back in a year.
