Yesterday evening I got up on the mountain to enjoy some nice fall color among the Aspens. We also got my son some great senior pictures.

This is so true... I fall squarely on one side of this divide.

In my previous career I used InSAR a lot. This mission has been a long time coming and it's very exciting to see it happen. This will be be a big deal in the InSAR world over the coming years. Even though I'm out of that game now, I look forward to seeing what it does.

Some good news from space, as the NASA-ISRO NISAR mission publishes its first synthetic aperture radar images of Earth. This spacecraft has a heckin' big antenna (a dish 12 meters across) for bouncing L- and S-band (25- and 10-cm) radio waves off the surface www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-is...

Preliminary images from the most powerful Earth radar satellite ever launched offer a tantalizing glimpse of the science the mission will be able to deliver.

South Texas game cam catches a raccoon riding a javelina (Dicotyles tajacu).

The deer feeder corn attracts a lot of other species, but maybe we should worry about them all teaming up against us?

(📷: Jeff Davis, TAMU-Kingsville alumni forum)
On a black and white game cam, three javelinas are browsing corn while a raccoon sits on one of their backs. The lighting produces laser-eyes in the raccoon, who is secretly one of the X-Men. A raccoon knight on a javelina steed. "Onward, Pigasus! Let us show them the meaning of haste". Motion blurred, black and white game cam shot.

I'm totally here for the tide fights.

Hey, it’s us, Canada here, just an internal battle about WHO HAS THE HIGHEST TIDE RANGE?

I live on the shore of Minas Basin, not too far from Burntcoat Head - I think I’m questioning these new measurements…. (It’s the trend to question evidence, right?)

For years Nova Scotia’s Burntcoat Head Park claimed the superior tidal height, but now a challenger from the far north is seeking the crown

Now I really want haggis pakoras and I could never have predicted that.

Reminder: The existence of these in most Scottish supermarkets and corner shops is proof that anyone shilling for the notion that multiculturalism can't work on this island is a charlatan

This video really was so significant - it was something completely new when it broke into the mainstream. And this was a time when I began my day before school by turning on MTV to watch videos and then watched videos while doing homework after school.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit”, released as a single 34 yrs ago today

“No one had any psychic foresight .. that the song would go on to do what it did,” said Grohl. “We just fuckin’ rocked it in a little rehearsal space that was like a barn. .. We just thought it was another cool song for the record.”

I grew up in Texas. I make my version of 'Texas chili'. I use beans and no meat (sometimes bacon for a nice smokey flavor). It is better.
stevanzetti.bsky.social
As a Texan I must admit that "Texas chili WITH beans" is superior

chili should have beans. do not listen to texans

As a child/teenager I always wanted to make snowmen like Calvin - but it didn't snow where I grew up. As an adult I moved to a place where it snowed, and I wanted to build these snowmen with my kids. I learned that it's really hard to make a snowman like that. I love those snowpeople.

looks like I let mine die in mid-2017, so that sounds right.

I hear that it's World Snake Day, so here's a pic of a Diamondback Water Snake that my son found in Oklahoma last weekend.

Fun bit of geochronology detective work, hypothesizing that the Meteor Crater Impact (Arizona) caused a landslide and paleolake formation in the Grand Canyon, and it all started with the discovery of driftwood in Stanton’s Cave in the 1980s pubs.geoscienceworld.org/gsa/geology/...

I live in the mountains our west. Nights are generally rather quite. So I forget how loud the night is in warm, humid places. The kids didn't believe me when I told them it's frogs.

this is an article about a camp I went to several times as a kid. I've been following this tragedy with horror. I grew up in that part of Texas, I attended camps and did all sorts of recreation in the hill country. This is a long known issue and is a failure of local/regional governments.
marisakabas.bsky.social
"The decision to leave added to the mounting accounts of how camps & residents in the area say they were left to make their own decisions in the absence of warnings or notifications from the county."

This is the result of allowing American hyper-individualism to influence how we govern—it's deadly.

Visited one of my favorite places in Arizona yesterday - Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. It's the world's largest travertine natural bridge and an amazing oasis.
