Since constructing their board the children have chosen to continue developing their fine motor skills by drawing and painting on it. Each creating individual pieces of art “a snake” EG, “I can draw ears on it” AB and also working together to create one large picture.

Once cut they theorised different ways to attach it to the wooden pallet. “Would glue work?” RM, “what about nails or screws” AM.
Together we decided on screws and with support they attached the boards using the drill. Then using sandpaper to take off sharp edges. #woodwork

Some children used their prediction skills. FMcC - I think he is going to be smaller than me. 109 that's a big number. RW - I think Noah is a little bit higher.
January 29, 2026 at 8:26 PM
There was lots of discussion about who was taller or smaller. NMcS- I am the tallest look! JD - you are the same height as Isla but a little bit more. KS
- Can I measure my bunny, it will be the smallest. When I am 5 I'm going to be bigger. BS - I'm bigger than Jack my brother.

To help with this the children started looking at the numbers on measuring tapes, they decided to try and measure each other. To record the results we made a height chart.

Throughout, the children displayed great perseverance, creativity, imagination, design, problem solving and engineering skills. SMcA - It didn’t work I need to make it smaller. IRH - Oh it fell over I need to build it again.

Ribbon, tape and pipe cleaners were added to encourage even more creativity and imagination. MW - I’ve made a rain cloud it’s raining. I’m trying to make the rain fall. RM - mine looks like a dinosaur.
January 29, 2026 at 8:12 PM
They began exploring and experimenting with the materials then showed their curiosity by testing out what they could construct. KS - I’m making a gate. SB - Taaadah! Look at mine I made a wobbly bridge. LE - A tunnel.

Using the same mixture as before with support we recreated our salt mixture, developing our knowledge of weighting and measuring “It’s got to be the same” AM. We then independently chose the colours to add. Leaving them out we are now waiting to see if crystals form.

As the picture dried more began to show and the children brought their peers over to see they ice painting, showing how proud they were. While discussing the picture JD recalled making crystals before and asked to do it again “can we do it too” AM, “me too” RW.
January 29, 2026 at 3:59 PM
As the liquid mixture started to dry the salt crystals began to appear. “Look it’s there, I did that” AM. “I can see it, it’s like the ice” RW. “ I’m going to paint a face next” JD, developing their fine motor skills as they continued to draw more intricate patterns and designs.
January 29, 2026 at 3:54 PM
Together we mixed our own ice painting mixture using salt and water in equal parts “it’s the same“ AM. Using the paint brushes we painted the patterns at first we couldn’t see anything apart from the water marks “it’s just water” AM, “there is nothing there” JD.
#STEAM, #numeracy.

The children were highly observant, showing good number recognition skills 1-5, self-regulation, and consideration for others during the snack routine. #problemsolvingskills #numeracy #responsibility
January 27, 2026 at 5:57 PM
The children have showed understanding of these limits and made thoughtful choices when serving themselves. WB-showed awareness and responsibility by noticing that their friend had taken too many apple pieces and gently reminded them to put some back. #marvellousmealtimes
